The Father on Claire’s Birth Certificate

Chapter 06 - The Father on Claire’s Birth Certificate

Victoria denied the paternity report.

Then asked to see the date.

Her face changed.

Claire understood before she spoke.

Thirty-one years earlier, Victoria and Charles had separated for six months.

During that time, Victoria had a relationship with Dr. Julian Cross, a research physician at Ashford.

She returned to Charles before Claire was born.

No test was performed.

Charles put his name on the birth certificate and never asked publicly.

Privately, he ordered a test when Claire was ten.

Daniel Mercer arranged it.

The result excluded Charles.

He kept the truth and used it to justify treating Meredith as the natural successor.

Claire was family when her shares were useful and an outsider whenever independence threatened him.

Julian Cross had died eight years earlier.

Or so Victoria believed.

The file showed he entered witness protection after exposing an overseas clinical-data scheme tied to Ashford suppliers.

His death had been staged publicly for safety.

He was alive.

Rebecca warned Claire not to contact him until authorities confirmed the file.

Claire agreed.

This was not a reunion story yet.

It was evidence.

Charles admitted knowing Claire was not biologically his.

He said he raised her anyway.

As though fatherhood were generosity he could revoke.

Claire asked why he allowed Ruth to transfer her eighteen percent.

“Because Mother insisted.”

“And why did you later try to take it?”

“Because blood matters when control passes.”

The cruelty clarified everything.

Claire had spent years trying to earn warmth from a man who privately classified her as conditional family.

Leo’s birth did not create Charles’s rejection.

It exposed the rule he had always used.

Ethan asked whether the paternity revelation changed what Claire wanted for Leo’s surname.

She appreciated the question.

Leo remained Leo Ashford Laurent for the moment, both names listed, no dynasty deciding which half counted.

The independent board removed Charles as chair.

He retained shares but no executive authority.

Victoria resigned from every family committee.

Meredith cooperated with the patent review.

Then Julian Cross contacted Rebecca through federal counsel.

He had one request before speaking with Claire.

He wanted proof that Leo was safe from Ashford security.

Because twenty-two years earlier, Charles had threatened Julian’s infant son during the clinical-data dispute.

Julian’s son had disappeared afterward.

His name was Ethan Laurent.
