The Patent Company Meredith Owned

Chapter 04 - The Patent Company Meredith Owned

Meredith claimed she did not know the full structure.

The documents supported part of that claim.

She had developed three valuable rare-disease compounds. Charles told her Meridian North would protect the patents from Ashford’s debt and finally reward her for years of work.

She knew she was a beneficiary.

She did not know Ashford would pay three hundred million dollars.

She also knew Claire had not reviewed the transaction.

That was the line she could not explain away.

Meredith admitted she had wanted the closing completed before Claire learned anything.

She believed Ruth had chosen Claire as the “good daughter” and left Meredith only what she could earn under Charles’s approval.

Claire corrected her.

“Grandma did not choose me over you. She created a counterweight because Dad had already chosen you.”

The difference broke something open.

Meredith hired separate counsel and surrendered her devices.

Daniel Mercer disappeared before investigators could interview him.

His office server was wiped.

Before leaving, he sent Claire one encrypted file titled POST-BIRTH FAMILY CONTROL STRATEGY.

The author metadata pointed to Victoria.

Claire confronted her mother.

Victoria admitted writing the first outline.

Not the forged medical opinion.

Not the nursery threat.

But the original idea.

She had believed Leo’s unknown father might use the baby to gain Ashford shares.

She proposed placing Claire’s vote under a family committee until paternity and “maternal stability” were resolved.

Charles expanded the plan into guardianship.

Daniel converted it into legal documents.

Meredith supplied company schedules.

Each person added one layer.

No one felt responsible for the finished weapon.

Victoria wept.

“I thought I was protecting both daughters.”

Claire answered:

“You protected the company from having to ask either of us what we wanted.”

The board suspended Charles and Meredith pending independent review.

Daniel was reported missing and referred to authorities.

Ashford’s lenders demanded a restructuring proposal within thirty days.

Claire’s eighteen percent became the largest clean family voting block.

She could support a rescue, a sale, or a breakup.

Ethan’s company remained a likely buyer.

Then the independent audit found that Meridian North’s patents were not entirely Meredith’s work.

One key invention belonged to a deceased Ashford scientist named Dr. Naomi Bell.

Her widower had been told the research failed.

The patent had been transferred after her death for one dollar.

And the witness on that transfer was Ruth Ashford.

Claire’s grandmother, the woman everyone had treated as the family’s moral safeguard, had signed the first document in the chain.
