Ruth’s Signature

Chapter 05 - Ruth’s Signature
Ruth was ninety and still capable of making Claire feel twelve.
She listened to the accusation without interrupting.
Then said the signature was real.
She had witnessed Naomi Bell’s patent transfer twenty-five years earlier.
But the page Claire saw was not the page Ruth signed.
The original transferred the invention into a royalty-sharing trust for Naomi’s husband and daughter.
The recorded version transferred it to Ashford Biotech outright.
Someone had replaced the middle pages while preserving the signature page.
Charles had been general counsel then.
Daniel Mercer was his junior associate.
The pattern had begun before Meredith, before Claire’s trust, before Leo.
Ruth had discovered the altered transfer six years later and forced Ashford to create a private royalty reserve.
She never told Naomi’s family.
Why?
Because Charles said public disclosure would destroy the company and cost thousands of jobs.
Ruth chose private repair.
Then watched the reserve slowly disappear into research expenses.
“I corrected the money,” she said.
“No,” Claire replied. “You corrected the number inside the same secret.”
Ruth accepted that.
The Bell family was located.
Naomi’s daughter, Dr. Maya Bell, now fifty-two, ran a small genetics laboratory in Oregon.
She had spent her career believing her mother’s final project died with her.
When shown the records, she did not ask first about money.
She asked who had used Naomi’s name.
The answer was everyone.
Ashford in marketing.
Meredith in speeches.
Charles in founder stories.
No one credited the dead scientist whose work supported the company’s most valuable platform.
Maya agreed to join the restructuring discussion only if the patent history was corrected publicly and her family received independent valuation.
Claire supported her.
Meredith initially resisted.
Then read Naomi’s laboratory notes and recognized whole passages copied into her own team’s reports.
Her success had been built partly on an inheritance she did not know she had taken.
She withdrew her claim to exclusive ownership of Meridian North.
That decision exposed her seventy-million-dollar trust to restitution.
Charles called her a coward.
Meredith answered:
“No. I was a coward when I needed your permission to know what I owned.”
The family alliance broke.
Then police found Daniel Mercer at a private airfield.
He was carrying two passports, Ashford encryption keys, and a sealed paternity report.
The report did not concern Leo.
May you like
It concerned Claire.
According to Daniel’s file, Charles Ashford was not her biological father.
