The Vote From the Hospital Bed

Chapter 03 - The Vote From the Hospital Bed
Claire attended the emergency meeting by video with Leo sleeping beside her and an independent attorney in the chair her mother had occupied earlier.
Charles opened by calling the matter temporary.
Rebecca Shaw answered by asking why every temporary document lasted until someone else controlled Claire’s shares.
The board learned that Dr. Pritchard had never examined Claire, that the proxy rider had been added after her electronic signing session, and that Meredith’s credentials had uploaded the change.
Meredith went white.
She said Daniel Mercer had told her the amendment was routine.
Daniel denied it.
For the first time, Meredith saw how quickly the family lawyer would leave her holding the evidence.
Claire revoked every proxy on the record.
Charles argued she was unavailable.
Claire looked into the camera.
“I am speaking to you from a hospital bed. That is not the same as being absent.”
The independent directors adjourned the control vote and froze all family proxies pending review.
Charles lost by one vote.
Meredith abstained.
It was the first decision she had ever made that her father had not approved in advance.
After the call, Rebecca delivered Ruth’s sealed letter about Ethan.
Ruth had chosen him because Henri Laurent once forced Charles to repay eleven million dollars in hidden royalties from an old joint venture.
The Laurent family still held the records.
Ethan had known before meeting Claire that her father had a history of moving money through family-controlled entities.
He had not approached her for the trust.
But he had known enough to understand that falling in love with her carried a conflict.
He kept silent anyway.
Claire asked him to place Laurent’s Ashford debt into an independent lender committee.
He agreed.
Then she asked whether Laurent Global had ever considered buying Ashford assets.
Ethan paused.
That pause was the answer.
His company had submitted a confidential bid for Ashford’s diagnostics division six weeks earlier.
The man protecting Leo was also positioned to profit if Claire’s family empire collapsed.
Claire told him to leave.
He did.
No pleading.
No promise that love made the conflict harmless.
That restraint kept one door open.
Then Victoria returned with a flash drive copied from Charles’s private office.
Ashford owed more than six hundred million dollars.
Three hundred million had financed a patent purchase from Meridian North.
The hidden owner of Meridian North was Meredith.

And Claire’s forged proxy had supplied the decisive vote.
The sister who had expected Claire’s shares had already received seventy million dollars from a deal Claire never approved.
