Lila Moreno Calls From the Dead

Chapter 05 - Lila Moreno Calls From the Dead

Lila Moreno had learned to wake without moving.

It was the first survival lesson after the night powerful men taught her that a locked door could change the shape of a life.

She had lived under six names in eleven years. She had cleaned church basements, folded motel sheets, packed groceries, and cut her own hair in gas station bathrooms whenever she felt watched.

She was watching the news from an abandoned parish room when Kate Bennett's name appeared on the screen.

Not her face.

Her name.

A household employee injured at a private event.

Blackwell estate.

Caldwell family.

Lila dropped her coffee.

Father Emilio, the priest who had hidden her longer than any government ever would have, looked up from sorting cans.

"They found her," she whispered.

"The child?"

"My daughter."

At St. Vincent's, Kate held the phone against her ear and stared at Damon as she lied to him.

No one.

The word tasted terrible.

Lila's voice trembled through the line.

"Don't trust anyone with the last name Blackwell."

Kate looked at Damon.

He had just protected her. He had also investigated her bank account, her mother, her life, and now stood inside a family secret that might have started before she could walk.

"Why should I trust you?" Kate whispered.

Lila went silent.

Then she said, "You shouldn't. Not yet."

That honesty stopped Kate.

"Did you leave me?"

"I held you for forty-three minutes before Nathaniel took you. He said he would bring you back when we reached the courthouse. We never reached it."

Kate closed her eyes.

"Where are you?"

"Near the old Meridian. There is a key in your father's toolbox. It opens a locker beneath the hotel. David kept copies there. Names. Tapes. A contract."

"What contract?"

"The one that proves you were never meant to disappear. You were meant to be sold."

Kate's stomach rolled.

Damon watched her face.

She hated how carefully he noticed pain.

"Who was buying me?"

"A couple overseas. But Silas Blackwell found a better use for you."

Damon's father's name entered the room like smoke.

Kate looked away from Damon.

"Silas is dead."

Lila laughed once.

It was not a sane laugh.

"Rich men die on paper all the time."

The line went dead.

Kate sat with the phone in her hand.

Damon waited.

He did not demand. He did not reach for it. That made confession harder.

"It was Lila," she said.

Damon's face changed, but only in the eyes.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"She said there is a key in Dad's toolbox."

Margaret, still pale from crying, pointed toward the small bag Adrian had brought from storage.

"The green toolbox. Bottom panel."

Damon opened it.

Beneath nails, drill bits, and a faded photo of Kate missing two front teeth lay a brass key wrapped in wax paper.

Kate took it.

For the first time that day, something inside her hardened into purpose.

"Take me to the Meridian Hotel."

Damon looked at her cast.

"No."

"Wrong answer."

"You need rest."

"I need my life back. Rest can wait."

Adrian cleared his throat from the doorway.

"Boss, the hospital cameras caught Preston's car leaving ten minutes ago. Direction south. Toward the old hotel district."

Damon's expression went cold.

Kate was already swinging her legs out of bed.

"Then we should hurry."

Damon looked at her for a long second.

Then he held out her shoes.

In the hallway, Margaret whispered, "Katie, be careful."

Kate looked back.

"That's what everyone has been doing for me. Being careful. It didn't save Dad."

May you like

She closed her good hand around the key.

"Maybe it's time someone was brave instead."
