The Father Damon Buried

Chapter 11 - The Father Damon Buried

Silas Blackwell had always preferred rooms with exits other people could not see.

He waited in an old private club outside Lake Forest, in a library lined with leather books nobody had opened in forty years. Nathaniel sat in a wheelchair near the fireplace, sedated but alive. Preston Caldwell paced near the bar with a bruised wrist and terror beginning to humble him.

Silas found both men disappointing.

One son too moral.

One senator's son too stupid.

Only Damon had ever shown promise.

Then the Bennett girl had touched his sleeve in a hospital hallway, and Damon had begun making choices like a man with a soul.

Souls were expensive.

Silas intended to remind him.

At midnight, Damon's phone rang.

A video call.

Nathaniel appeared first.

Damon's face changed so quickly Kate felt it in her own chest.

Then Silas stepped into frame.

"Hello, son."

Damon's voice was controlled.

"If you touch him—"

"You always begin at the end. Bad negotiating habit."

Kate stood beside Damon in the study. Adrian traced the call from another room. Agent Marsh listened through a secure line. Margaret slept upstairs under guard. Lila prayed silently in the hall, perhaps to God, perhaps to every version of her daughter she had lost.

Silas looked at Kate through the screen.

"There she is. The girl who outlived her usefulness."

Kate stepped closer.

"You keep calling me a girl because woman scares you."

For one second, Silas's smile tightened.

Damon noticed.

So did Kate.

Good.

"Bring me the trust documents," Silas said. "The original contract. Sofia's statement. The tapes. And Kate."

"No," Damon said.

Silas lifted one hand.

A man behind Nathaniel pressed something against his neck.

Nathaniel groaned.

Damon stopped breathing.

Kate grabbed his wrist.

Not to restrain him.

To anchor him.

"One hour," Silas said. "Come alone, or Nathaniel dies correctly this time."

The call ended.

Damon turned away and drove his fist into the wall.

Kate flinched.

He saw it immediately.

Shame crossed his face.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't waste sorry on drywall."

"Kate—"

"He wants you blind. Furious. Alone. That's the trap."

Damon's breathing was harsh.

"He has my brother."

"And he wants you to trade everyone else for him."

Silence.

That was the ugliest truth in the room.

Damon looked at her.

"What would you have me do?"

"Not become him."

The words landed hard.

Adrian entered.

"Trace puts the call near Lake Forest. Three possible properties. One belongs to the Carrow Club."

Agent Marsh spoke through the speaker.

"We can move in quietly."

Damon shook his head.

"Silas will have exits."

Kate looked at Sofia's statement on the desk.

Then at the original adoption contract.

"Then we give him what he wants."

"Absolutely not," Damon said.

"Copies."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Marked copies. Trackers in the spine."

Damon looked at Kate.

"And you?"

"I go."

"No."

"Yes."

His eyes burned.

"He tried to sell you."

"Then let him look at what he failed to own."

Nobody spoke.

Kate stepped closer to Damon.

"You promised me no one would punish me for telling the truth. Let me tell it to his face."

His voice went quiet.

"I can't lose you."

There it was.

Not a command.

Not ownership.

Fear.

Kate felt her own fear answer.

"Then don't make my courage smaller just because it frightens you."

Damon closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he was not calmer.

He was choosing.

"We do it your way," he said. "But if anything changes—"

"You become terrifying?"

"Worse."

Kate almost smiled.

The plan took forty minutes.

At 1:14 a.m., Damon walked into the Carrow Club with Kate at his side and a folder in his left hand.

Silas waited by the fireplace.

Nathaniel sat beside him, pale but conscious.

Preston Caldwell stood behind the bar with a gun and shaking hands.

Silas looked at Damon.

"You brought her."

Kate answered.

"No. I brought him."

May you like

Then she placed the folder on the table.

"Now let's discuss the price of men who mistake daughters for property."
