The Baby in the Photograph

Chapter 04 - The Baby in the Photograph

Damon had spent eleven years refusing to say Nathaniel's name unless business required it.

Nate had been the brother with clean hands, clean files, and dangerous ideas about justice. He believed evidence could defeat money. Damon had loved him for that and feared for him because of it.

Then Nate disappeared.

A burned car was found behind the Meridian Hotel. His watch lay in a storm drain. There was enough blood on the door for the police to call him dead.

No body.

Never a body.

Now Margaret Bennett sat in a hospital chair and told them Nate had been searching for a baby.

"Lila Moreno gave birth after the fundraiser," she whispered. "Preston was the father. Caldwell wanted the child erased from the story. Nathaniel wanted proof. David helped him."

Kate tried to follow the words, but each one seemed to open another locked room.

"Where is the baby?"

Margaret looked at her daughter and did not answer fast enough.

Kate felt the air leave her lungs.

"Mom."

Damon's phone rang before Margaret could speak.

Adrian.

He took the call in the hallway and returned with his jaw tight.

"Preston was outside the hospital twenty minutes ago. He left this at the front desk."

A nurse brought in a small brown envelope.

Damon opened it with gloves.

Inside was an old plastic hospital bracelet.

BABY GIRL MORENO.

Underneath, handwritten in faded black ink, was another word.

BENNETT.

Kate stared until the letters blurred.

"No."

Margaret began to sob.

"Katie—"

"No."

Lies were supposed to feel like sharp things. This felt like the floor disappearing.

Margaret reached for her. Kate moved back, forgetting her arm, and pain shot through her shoulder.

Damon stepped forward, then stopped himself.

That mattered.

Even in that moment, she noticed.

"Am I your daughter?" Kate asked.

Margaret pressed a hand to her mouth.

"You became my daughter before sunrise."

The answer broke something and healed nothing.

Margaret told the rest in pieces.

David came home one night carrying an infant wrapped in a blue blanket. Nathaniel had asked him to hide the child for one night while he got Lila to a safe place. One night became two. Then the fire happened. Nathaniel vanished. David was killed. Men came to Margaret's apartment with photographs of seven-month-old Kate and told her that if she wanted the baby to grow up, she would sign new papers and never say Lila Moreno again.

"So my whole life was a witness protection lie?" Kate asked.

"It was a life," Margaret said. "It was bedtime stories and school lunches and chicken soup when you had the flu. Don't let them take that from us too."

Kate turned away because she could not bear how much she still loved her.

Damon placed a photograph on the tray.

It showed the Meridian Hotel eleven years earlier. Lila stood in a pale green dress. Preston smiled behind her. Near a service door stood David Bennett.

And reflected in the mirror behind him was Nathaniel Blackwell holding a blue baby blanket.

Kate touched the image with her good hand.

"Me."

Damon's voice was low.

"Yes."

On the back of the photograph someone had written three words.

Find the girl.

Kate looked at Damon.

"Who wrote that?"

Before he could answer, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered because everything in her life had already broken.

A woman whispered, "You have your mother's eyes."

Kate froze.

Damon stepped closer.

Kate covered the phone with her palm.

"Who is it?" he asked.

She looked at the bracelet.

Then she told him the first lie she had ever told Damon Blackwell.

"No one."
