Chapter 09 - Grand Central

The call came from Lucia, and Lucia did not waste breath on panic. “The grandmother took the child,” she said. Anna heard enough. “No.” Dominic reached for her, but she was already moving.

Margaret called twenty minutes later. “Anna,” she whispered. Anna’s voice turned cold. “Where is my daughter?” Margaret confessed that Caldwell’s foundation had paid for her treatment. Men had called that morning and threatened to use the custody order unless she brought Lily to them.

“I thought I could trade myself instead,” Margaret said. Dominic’s voice cut in, low and controlled. “Where?” “Grand Central. Lower level. Vanderbilt passage. They wanted Lily at six.” Dominic checked the clock. 5:51.

“Margaret, listen to me,” he said. “Do not go lower level. Take Lily to the clock in the main concourse. Put her on the information booth counter if you have to. Make a scene.” Margaret gave a broken laugh. “I spent six years hiding.” “Then today you stop.”

Grand Central at rush hour was a river of bodies beneath painted constellations. Dominic entered with Marco from one side. Anna entered with Agent Vega from another. Every instinct screamed at her to run shouting Lily’s name. She did not. Fear could move quietly and still be fear.

Margaret appeared near the clock, Lily holding her hand. Anna saw her daughter and almost broke formation. Dominic’s voice came through the earpiece: “Wait.” A man in a gray coat moved toward Margaret. Another near the ticket machines. A woman with red gloves waited by the coffee kiosk.

Lily saw Anna. Anna pressed a finger to her lips. The child’s face crumpled with relief, but she stayed quiet. Margaret lifted Lily onto the booth counter and screamed, “My granddaughter is being kidnapped!” Half the station turned.

The man in gray lunged. Dominic reached him first. Marco took the second. Agent Vega took the woman with red gloves down so fast Anna later wondered whether all prosecutors fought like that. Anna ran, and Lily jumped into her arms.

Margaret stood nearby, weeping. “I’m sorry.” Anna looked at her over Lily’s shoulder. For once, sorry had arrived with action. Not enough. But not nothing.

Then a shot cracked across the concourse. Dominic shoved Anna and Lily behind the booth. Margaret stumbled, blood blooming across her shoulder. Across the station, Senator Caldwell lowered a small pistol and disappeared into the crowd.
