The Voice in the Dead House

Chapter 04 - The Voice in the Dead House
The telephone sat beneath a tarnished mirror in the back hall. It was black, heavy, and old enough to belong to a world where secrets traveled through copper wires and men listened from other rooms. Dominic picked up the receiver on the fourth ring.
A man’s voice came through the static. “Salvatore’s son finally brought the Carter girl home.” Dominic’s hand tightened. “Voss.” Anna went pale. The vanished accountant laughed softly. “Still quick. Your father hated that.”
Voss told them Paul Carter had not stolen from the Morettis. He had found the ledger: names of judges, inspectors, police captains, politicians, every respectable person Salvatore owned and every respectable person Carlo Moretti wanted to own. Paul hid the ledger beneath Pier 47, in a flood chamber where water would keep the names.
“Why tell us now?” Dominic asked. Voss coughed long enough to sound mortal. “Because Raines no longer works alone. Your uncle Carlo is back.” The room changed. Carlo Moretti had left America six years earlier after losing a challenge for power and an eye to Salvatore’s rage.
Anna looked at Lily asleep on the sofa. “Why do they want my daughter?” Voss answered with no mercy. “The deed names Lily as contingent owner if Anna dies or is declared incapable. The trust can move voting power if the Moretti board is compromised.”
Anna covered her mouth. Dominic closed his eyes briefly, seeing the shape of the trap: fire Anna, question her stability, seize Lily, control Pier 47, bury the ledger forever.

Before the line died, Voss said, “Tell Anna her mother did not die ignorant. She chose silence so her daughter could live outside your world as long as possible.” Anna stepped forward. “What does that mean?” But the receiver was already humming with emptiness.
At 11:49 p.m., they reached Pier 47. Fog hugged the old waterfront warehouse. On the rusted door hung a fresh white envelope: MR. MORETTI — PERSONAL. Inside was a photograph of Lily asleep on her school mat. On the back, someone had written: The child is already inside the game.
