The Girl Beneath the Chandelier

Chapter 01 - The Girl Beneath the Chandelier

Lily Carter had waited nearly two hours beneath the chandelier before she stepped into Dominic Moretti’s path. She was six years old, small enough to disappear behind the marble columns of Moretti Plaza, brave enough to ride two subway lines from Brooklyn with a stuffed rabbit under one arm and her mother’s termination letter folded in her pocket.

The lobby was all black-and-white marble, brass elevator doors, white roses, and men in suits who looked at everyone as if they were already guilty of something. Lily did not know the Moretti name frightened half of New York. She only knew her mother had cried in the bathroom that morning.

Dominic Moretti crossed the lobby at 6:18 p.m., Marco several steps behind him. Employees looked away. Lily stepped forward, lifted the paper with both hands, and asked, quietly but firmly, “Why did you fire my mom?” The lobby changed. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved.

Dominic lowered himself to her eye level. “What’s your name?” “Lily Carter.” He glanced at the letter. “May I see that?” “Are you going to tear it up?” “No.” “You promise?” A corner of his mouth almost moved. “I promise.”

She gave him the paper but watched his hands. Dominic read the company seal, then the employee name: ANNA CARTER. Something old moved behind the name, not recognition exactly, but the sense of a door opening in a house he had never wanted to revisit.

“Your mother is Anna Carter?” he asked. Lily nodded. “She worked here eight years. She never missed pickup unless the train broke.” Dominic looked at the signature: Julian Raines, Vice President of Internal Compliance. A man Dominic had never liked enough to trust with an unlocked drawer.

Then Lily reached into her backpack and removed a yellowed envelope tied with a faded ribbon. The front read: MR. MORETTI — PERSONAL. “Mommy has a whole shoebox,” she said. “Letters to the old Mr. Moretti.” Dominic recognized the tremor in the handwriting. His father’s final year had left the same weakness in every stroke.

Before he could open it, the lobby doors burst inward and a woman ran across the marble. “Lily!” Anna Carter dropped to her knees and wrapped her daughter in both arms. When she looked up and saw Dominic holding the envelope, all the blood left her face.

“You shouldn’t have come here,” Anna whispered to her daughter, but her eyes stayed on Dominic. “You know me,” he said. “I know what your father did,” Anna answered. At that exact moment, every elevator door opened at once, and Marco’s earpiece crackled with a warning: “Boss, Julian Raines just left with three archive boxes.”

Dominic looked at Anna. Anna looked at the envelope. And Lily, still clutching her rabbit, whispered the words that made the whole night tilt: “Mommy, is that the box with my birth paper?”
