Chapter 7

Evelyn was forced to vacate her luxury penthouse overlooking Central Park, moving into a modest assisted-living facility funded only by a minimal government pension, shunned by her former high-society friends.

One cold afternoon six months later, the final decree of our divorce was formally signed in the private chambers of the supreme commercial court, terminating every remaining tie between us.

Aaron waited on the courthouse steps in a worn, ill-fitting wool coat, looking older by twenty years, his shoulders slumped as he watched my armored limousine pull up to the curb.

As I walked down the marble steps flanked by Eleanor and my security detail, Aaron stepped forward tentatively, his voice trembling with a pathetic mixture of sorrow and profound regret.

"Alyssa..." he whispered, his eyes hollow as he looked at the woman he had discarded for a few moments of petty flattery on a private jet. "Do you ever think about the beginning? When we were happy?"

I paused on the final step, looking at him not with hatred or vengeance, but with the quiet, detached pity one reserves for a stranger who deliberately threw away paradise for dust.

"I think about the beginning, Aaron," I replied softly, my voice clear in the brisk autumn air. "The difference is, back then, I believed you were a man worthy of my devotion."

"You made me believe I was small so that you could feel tall," I added gently. "You took everything I gave you and called it your own genius. And in the end, you destroyed yourself."

"If I had just stayed in my seat... if I had just told Jasmine to move... would things be different?" Aaron asked, a single tear escaping his eye and rolling down his hollow cheek.

I looked at him for a long, quiet moment before turning toward the open door of my car, where Eleanor waited with the morning's international acquisition reports.

"The seat was never the problem, Aaron," I said, stepping into the warm interior of the vehicle without looking back. "The seat merely showed me that you had forgotten who held the sky above your head."

The heavy car door clicked shut with a solid, satisfying thud, sealing me inside the quiet sanctuary of the life, the power, and the future I had earned with my own brilliance.

The limousine pulled smoothly away from the curb, leaving Aaron standing alone on the cold courthouse steps, watching my taillights disappear into the bustling rhythm of the great city.

Through the tinted glass, I looked up at the towering glass spire of Vance Technologies piercing the clear blue sky, its gleaming letters reflecting the brilliant afternoon sun across the horizon.

For four long years, I had hidden my light in the shadows, hoping to nurture someone else's fragile dream at the expense of my own rightful destiny and self-respect.

Never again would I swallow humiliation and call it love; never again would I step aside to let lesser souls claim the victories forged by my intellect and sacrifice.

I opened the new portfolio folder, picked up my gold fountain pen, and signed my true name across the future of the world I had built—untouchable, uncompromising, and completely free.
