Chapter 3

"Captain, why are we turning around?" Aaron shouted into the intercom with a cracked voice, his customary boardroom arrogance dissolving into pure panic as the plane leveled toward the city.

The voice crackling through the cabin speaker was calm, formal, and utterly chilling in its absolute professionalism, shattering whatever fragile composure remained among the stunned passengers onboard.

"Mr. Prescott, by direct order of the aircraft's sole registered owner, this charter has been terminated immediately. We have been directed to land at Vance International Terminal within twenty minutes."

Aaron’s mother gasped loudly, dropping her gold-encrusted purse to the floor as several diamond bracelets clattered uselessly against the expensive cabin carpet in the heavy silence.

"Vance International?" Evelyn stammered, staring wide-eyed at her son. "Aaron, why would we land at their private airfield? Isn’t that the family that owns half the eastern manufacturing corridor?"

Aaron did not answer his mother because his mind was spinning through years of quiet conversations he had dismissed as meaningless family gossip from a wife he considered utterly helpless.

He remembered my maiden name on dusty corporate disclosures, letters bearing the wax seal of the Vance Trust, and quiet wire transfers that had rescued his bankrupt servers without asking for fanfare.

Jasmine reached out to touch his sleeve, seeking reassurance, but Aaron flinched away violently, his eyes darting across Marcus’s glowing tablet as millions vanished from his leveraged paper fortune.

"Marcus," Aaron rasped, his throat dry as sandpaper as he leaned forward in raw desperation. "Call our commercial banking partners. Tell them to issue a counter-injunction before market open tomorrow."

"Sir, every major investment bank we deal with has already suspended our credit lines," Marcus answered softly, refusing to look him in the eye. "The Vance Trust is their principal underwriter."

The realization hit Aaron like a sledgehammer, knocking the breath from his chest as the jet’s landing gear deployed with a heavy mechanical thud against the howling night wind.

Down below on the wet tarmac, a convoy of black luxury sedans stood parked beneath the bright security lights of the private terminal, their engines idling in silent, disciplined formation.

I sat quietly inside the climate-controlled passenger cabin of the lead Maybach, watching through tinted glass as the descending jet cut through the rain toward the designated private runway.

Beside me, my family's senior legal advisor, Eleanor Vance, reviewed the final batch of corporate restructuring mandates, stamping each document with the ancient seal of our private trust.

"The board of directors is already assembling at the downtown headquarters," Eleanor remarked quietly, adjusting her silver-rimmed glasses with practiced elegance. "They received the forensic accounting summary twenty minutes ago."

"Did Marcus forward the secondary ledger?" I asked, turning my gaze away from the rainy runway toward the glowing electronic file containing Aaron's illicit transactions over the past eighteen months.

"He did," Eleanor replied with a faint, knowing smile. "Marcus always knew how to survive a boardroom fire. He knows exactly where the actual power in this company has always resided."

The jet touched down smoothly, its reverse thrusters roaring against the wet asphalt before it taxied toward the isolated private hangar where our private security personnel stood waiting.

The mobile stairs rolled forward and docked against the main cabin door, which swung open to reveal the rain-swept airfield and a dozen security officers dressed in tailored dark coats.

Aaron stumbled down the steps first, his silk tie loosened, his expensive jacket soaked within seconds by the driving rain as he frantically searched the dark terminal for my face.

Behind him, Evelyn clung to the metal railing, terrified of slipping in her high designer heels, while Jasmine trailed behind like a lost child, clutching an empty designer umbrella.

Aaron sprinted toward the sleek black Maybach, slapping his palms against the reinforced passenger window with an expression of frantic pleading that contrasted sharply with his previous arrogance.

"Alyssa! Open the door!" he screamed over the roaring wind. "We can fix this! Let’s talk about this privately like husband and wife! It was just a misunderstanding on the plane!"

The tinted glass rolled down three inches, just enough for the cold, fragrant night air to pass between us, revealing my calm, unbothered eyes beneath the warm interior reading lights.

"A misunderstanding, Aaron?" I asked smoothly, my voice carrying clear and steady above his breathless stammering. "You told me to remember my place in front of your entire executive team."

"I was stressed, Alyssa! The investors were pressuring me, and Jasmine only needed a comfortable seat because she was sick!" he pleaded, his soaked hair plastering against his pale forehead.

"Then be grateful I gave you the entire aircraft," I said quietly, a faint smile touching my lips as his mother hobbled up behind him, drenched and visibly shaking with humiliation.

"Alyssa, how dare you treat your husband this way!" Evelyn shrieked through the window gap. "You owe everything you have to Aaron's brilliant mind! You are merely his wife!"
