Cousin Rafael

Chapter 19 - Cousin Rafael

Rafael Torres arrived at the mansion the next morning wearing linen, sunglasses, and the wounded expression of a man who had practiced concern in a mirror.

Mariana watched him from the upstairs window while Samuel ate cereal at the breakfast table under Elena's supervision. Thiago had decided the boy should have something normal before the day turned legal again. Normal, in the Almeida house, meant cereal in a porcelain bowl worth more than Mariana's first car.

Samuel did not care. He asked for the kind with marshmallows.

Rafael looked less like Beatriz than Mariana expected. Dark hair, easy smile, soft hands. He carried himself with the relaxed arrogance of men who believed charm was a room key.

Thiago received him in the garden.

Not the formal parlor. Not the boardroom. The garden under the jacaranda, where the truth had started knocking.

Mariana stood nearby because Thiago had asked, not ordered. Celia sat in a shaded chair with tea she complained was weak. Elena watched from the terrace, still recovering from her return to the living world.

Rafael removed his sunglasses.

"Cousin," he said. "This has become a mess."

Thiago's face stayed calm. "Your mother made one."

"My mother made mistakes."

"Your mother imprisoned mine in a care facility, erased my son, stole from my dead wife's trust, and tried to frame Mariana. Choose a larger word."

Rafael's smile tightened.

"I came to help."

Mariana almost laughed.

Men like Rafael always arrived with help after their plan failed.

"You went to Samuel's school," she said.

He turned his attention to her with a polished little pause, as if acknowledging furniture had spoken.

"I sent someone to ensure his records were secure."

"You sent strangers to ask for a child's records without his mother's consent."

"With respect, Ms. Rivera, the child's legal situation is unclear."

Thiago's voice cut in. "No. It is complicated. Not unclear. Mariana is his mother."

Rafael's eyes flickered.

"That's generous. But generosity won't survive probate court."

There it was.

The family language. Affection translated into risk. Love measured by filings.

Celia set down her tea. "Probate court won't enjoy your mother's ledgers."

Rafael ignored her.

"Thiago, I know you're angry. I would be too. But think like the man who built Almeida Global. A hidden heir can destabilize everything. The board is nervous. Investors are nervous. If you keep tying yourself publicly to domestic staff—"

"Stop," Thiago said.

Rafael stopped, but only because the tone required it.

"You came here to offer a settlement," Thiago said.

Rafael smiled. "A path forward."

He opened a folder and placed papers on the garden table.

Mariana did not touch them.

Thiago did.

He read one page, then another. His mouth flattened.

"You want Mariana to sign a confidentiality agreement, accept a trust distribution, and relocate with Samuel to a property in Arizona."

Rafael looked at her with warm falseness. "A beautiful home. Excellent schools. Financial security for life."

Samuel came out through the terrace doors at exactly the wrong moment, cereal spoon still in hand.

"Are we moving?"

Mariana's heart clenched.

Rafael smiled at him.

"Wouldn't you like a big house?"

Samuel looked around the mansion, unimpressed.

"This one is too big. It echoes."

Elena laughed from the terrace.

Rafael lost patience for half a second. "Children don't decide adult matters."

Samuel moved behind Mariana.

Thiago placed the papers back on the table.

"No. But they reveal them."

He nodded to Camila, who stepped from the terrace with a tablet.

"Rafael Torres," she said, "we found your name on the shell company paying the Ojai residence. We also found your signature on the renewal contract for Elena Almeida's confinement."

Rafael's charm fell away.

He looked at his grandmother on the terrace.

Elena stared back.

"You were a boy when I disappeared," she said softly. "Your mother made you useful early."

For the first time, Rafael looked less like a predator and more like someone's ruined child.

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced down and went pale.

Thiago noticed.

"What is it?"

Rafael swallowed.

"My mother is out on bond."

May you like

The front gate alarm sounded before anyone could move.

Beatriz Almeida had come home.
