Lucía's Closet

Chapter 17 - Lucía's Closet

They returned to the mansion with Elena Almeida in the back of a police SUV and Beatriz already waiting at the gates with three attorneys.

That was how Mariana knew Beatriz was afraid.

Powerful people do not bring that many lawyers to places they still control.

The driveway filled with black cars. Reporters shouted from beyond the gates. Security doubled along the hedges. Staff watched from windows, pretending to dust or adjust curtains.

Samuel slept through most of it, cheek pressed against Mariana's cardigan, toy car finally reclaimed from Elena with solemn terms of future borrowing.

Thiago insisted Elena be brought inside through the front doors.

"This is her house too," he said.

Beatriz stood in the foyer under the crystal chandelier, cream suit replaced by charcoal, diamonds smaller now. Sensible choices for a woman expecting cameras.

Then she saw Elena.

For the first time, Beatriz Almeida looked old.

"Hello, Bea," Elena said.

The nickname landed like a slap without a hand raised.

Beatriz whispered, "You were safer where you were."

Detective Hollis stepped between them. "That's enough."

They went to the east wing as a strange procession: police, attorneys, guards, Elena in a borrowed cardigan, Thiago in his chair, Mariana carrying Samuel, Celia with a cane she complained about, and Beatriz walking behind them like a condemned queen refusing to drag her hem.

Lucía's closet was hidden behind a paneled wall in the nursery.

Elena knew the release latch.

"Lucía found it after the accident," she said. "Your grandmother used to hide Christmas gifts there."

The panel opened.

Inside was a narrow cedar closet, the air rich with old wood and lavender sachets. Dresses hung beneath muslin covers. Shoe boxes lined one wall. At the back stood a child's step stool painted with clouds.

No handle on the outside.

Mariana looked at it and understood without wanting to.

A closet built for hiding gifts had been turned into a place to hide papers. Maybe people. Maybe both.

Elena pointed to the stool. "Lift the third board beneath it."

A detective did.

Under the floorboard sat a metal ledger box wrapped in oilcloth.

Beatriz said nothing.

That was confession enough for the room, but not for court.

Detective Hollis opened it carefully.

Inside were original stock certificates, guardianship correspondence, letters from Elena to Thiago returned unopened, and a ledger with transfers marked in Beatriz's handwriting.

At the bottom lay one envelope sealed in wax.

Thiago's name was written across it.

Mariana watched his hands as he opened it. Slower than before. A man learns to be careful when every envelope changes his life.

Inside was a letter from Lucía.

My love,

If this reaches you, I am trusting the part of you Beatriz could never train out of existence. The part that used to stop for stray dogs on business trips and pretend it was strategy.

Mariana looked away to give him privacy, but Thiago read on aloud, voice breaking and mending with every sentence.

She told him she knew Samuel might grow up elsewhere. She told him Mariana was chosen not because she was poor enough to disappear, but because she was good enough not to sell him. She told him Elena was alive. She told him Beatriz had used family loyalty like a locked room.

Then came the final page.

Do not let our son inherit a house where women are only believed after they are buried, hidden, or useful.

Make a better one.

Thiago lowered the letter.

Mariana held Samuel tighter.

Beatriz finally spoke.

"She made all of you sentimental. That was Lucía's talent."

Elena turned to her.

"No, Bea. Her talent was surviving you long enough to leave directions."

Detective Hollis nodded to the officers.

This time, when Beatriz was led away, no one stopped them.

But as she passed Mariana, she leaned close enough to whisper.

"You think this ends with me? Ask him about the adoption petition he signed this morning."

May you like

Mariana looked at Thiago.

His face told her he had been keeping one secret of his own.
