The Phone That Should Have Been Buried

Chapter 10 - The Phone That Should Have Been Buried

Thiago knew the song before the second note.

Lucía had chosen it during a road trip up Highway 1, laughing because he hated folk music and she enjoyed finding harmless ways to annoy him. She used it as his ringtone for six months, then for herself on a cheap backup phone when she began to suspect the house lines were being monitored.

He had forgotten that detail.

Grief had stolen so many small things from him, then returned them at cruel times.

Beatriz stood motionless with one gloved hand near her purse.

Camila looked from Thiago to the sound. "Should I call security upstairs?"

"Security is already here," Thiago said. "Open the purse."

"This is absurd," Beatriz snapped.

There. The polish cracked.

A guard took the purse, placed it on the nursery dresser, and removed a slim phone wrapped in a silk scarf.

The screen showed no name. Only a number.

Thiago nodded once.

The guard answered on speaker.

A man's voice said, "It's done. The clinic file is gone, but the sister kept copies. Tell Beatriz the maid is the problem now."

Mariana felt Samuel's fingers dig into her hand.

Beatriz closed her eyes.

The caller kept talking. "And Malcolm says if Almeida saw the video, we use the custody angle. Paint Rivera as unstable, low-income, opportunistic. Judges still like clean houses."

Celia made a sound of disgust.

The guard said nothing.

The caller paused. "Hello?"

Thiago's voice was soft enough to be deadly.

"Who is this?"

The line went dead.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Samuel whispered, "He said Mama."

Not her name. Not her title. Just Mama.

Mariana had spent six years worrying the truth would erase that word. Now it seemed to make it stronger.

Beatriz regained herself like a woman picking up spilled pearls.

"I have no idea who that was."

Camila lifted her tablet. "We do. The number traces to a private investigator retained by the Almeida Foundation. Paid through a donor-advised account Malcolm administered."

"That proves nothing."

"It proves enough for a temporary restraining order," Thiago said. "And an emergency injunction."

Beatriz looked at him with real anger now. Not elegant anger. Family anger, old and ugly.

"You were a boy with a talent for numbers until I made you into something."

"My father made the company. My mother kept it alive. Lucía gave it a conscience." Thiago looked at Samuel. "And that boy just gave it a future I don't deserve but intend to protect."

The words hung in the nursery.

Mariana had not expected him to say deserve. Powerful men rarely admitted distance between what they owned and what they deserved.

Beatriz stepped closer. "You think love will fix bloodlines? You think this woman won't marry her way into your fortune the moment your guard drops?"

Mariana almost answered, but Thiago did.

"Mariana has had six years to sell my son to the highest bidder. She chose school lunches and secondhand sneakers instead. I trust that more than I trust every lawyer you ever introduced me to."

Celia wiped her eyes.

Samuel tugged Thiago's sleeve.

"Do I have to be rich?"

Thiago looked down, startled.

"No."

"Good," Samuel said. "I don't like jackets."

A laugh moved through the room, small and shaky, but real. Even Mariana felt it break something open in her chest.

Beatriz hated that laugh.

It showed on her face.

Camila's phone buzzed. She glanced down, then stiffened.

"Mr. Almeida, LAPD has detained Malcolm's driver at the lower gate. He had a duffel bag in the trunk."

"Documents?" Thiago asked.

"Cash," Camila said. "Passports. And a small hard drive labeled with Samuel's initials."

Beatriz's brooch trembled with the rise of her breath.

Samuel looked at Mariana.

"Why does everyone keep putting my name on scary stuff?"

Mariana knelt and cupped his face.

"Because grown-ups made a mess," she said. "And now they're going to clean it up."

Outside, thunder rolled over the mountains though the sky remained bright.

Camila looked at the tablet again.

"There's one more thing. The hard drive has a recent video file. Recorded last night. In this house."

Beatriz reached for the dresser.

May you like

The guard caught her wrist before she touched Lucía's phone.

And from somewhere below them, the mansion's front doors slammed open.
