The Man Vivien Finally Chose to Betray

Chapter 15 - The Man Vivien Finally Chose to Betray

Emergency lights turned the hallway red.

Elena heard Sofia breathing beside her.

Someone shouted near the elevators.

A fire alarm began pulsing.

Marcus locked the conference room door.

“Back stairwell?”

Alessandra shook her head.

“Glass door. No lock from this side.”

Vivien stared at her phone.

“No signal.”

Elena took out hers.

Nothing.

A jammer.

She had learned more criminal vocabulary in three days than she had wanted in a lifetime.

The conference room door handle moved.

Everyone stopped.

Then three knocks.

Pause.

Two knocks.

Dante’s voice.

“Elena.”

She opened the door.

He came in alone.

His coat was open, his expression controlled.

“You were across the street.”

“Yes.”

“How did you get upstairs?”

“Stairs.”

“Forty-two floors?”

“Thirty-seven. The lobby elevators stopped at five.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You ran thirty-seven floors?”

Dante glanced at him.

“I dislike waiting.”

Even Elena laughed once.

It came out shaky.

Dante’s gaze moved over her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Sofia?”

“I’m fine.”

“Vivien?”

She did not answer.

She was looking at the hallway.

“Daniel is here.”

“How do you know?” Dante asked.

“My brother used to do this when he wanted to scare our stepfather. Cut power. Kill phones. Make everybody feel trapped before he entered.”

Marcus touched her arm.

Vivien pulled away automatically.

Not cruelly.

Simply no longer wanting comfort she had not chosen.

Dante listened near the door.

“Federal agents are downstairs.”

“Can we reach them?” Elena asked.

“Not electronically.”

“Then we leave.”

He looked at her.

She expected an argument.

Instead:

“Yes.”

Progress.

They moved toward the emergency stairs.

Halfway down the hall, a man stepped from a side office.

Daniel.

Gun in hand.

He looked tired.

Not mad.

Not wild.

That made him more frightening.

“Viv.”

Vivien stopped.

Dante shifted in front of Elena and Sofia.

Elena touched his sleeve.

Not yet.

Daniel noticed.

“You always did like dangerous men, Elena.”

She stared.

“We have spoken twice.”

“I read the files.”

“Apparently everyone has.”

Daniel almost smiled.

He looked at Vivien.

“Come here.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“Enzo is leaving the country tonight.”

“Good.”

“He will leave us holding everything.”

“You chose him.”

“I chose the truth about Mom.”

“No.”

Vivien’s voice broke.

“You chose revenge.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“He killed her.”

“Dante chased her.”

Dante did not flinch.

Vivien continued.

“And then he tried to save her. Both things happened.”

Daniel raised the gun slightly.

“Don’t repeat his version.”

“It is the surgeon’s version.”

“He paid people.”

“Stop.”

Vivien stepped forward.

For the first time, she looked like the confident bride from the ballroom.

Only now the confidence belonged to her.

“You have spent fourteen years needing one villain because if Mom died in a stupid accident caused by frightened men following orders, then your pain has nowhere clean to go.”

Daniel’s face twisted.

“He killed her.”

“You need him to have murdered her.”

“Yes!”

The shout echoed.

Vivien did not move.

“I needed Elena to be the reason Marcus didn’t love me.”

Elena looked at her.

Vivien’s eyes filled.

“It was easier than admitting I chose a man who belonged to a life he had not finished grieving.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Vivien continued.

“We both built villains because grief felt smaller when it had a face.”

Daniel’s hand began to shake.

Dante said quietly, “Put the gun down.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You don’t get to speak.”

“Fine.”

Dante lifted both hands.

Daniel turned back to Vivien.

“Come with me.”

“No.”

“I am your brother.”

“Yes.”

“I protected you.”

“You used me.”

His face changed.

That phrase.

The recurring sin.

Daniel lowered the gun one inch.

Then Enzo appeared behind him.

Nobody had heard him approach.

“Enough.”

Enzo fired.

The shot hit Daniel in the side.

Vivien screamed.

Dante pushed Elena and Sofia into an office doorway.

Marcus lunged toward Vivien.

Enzo grabbed her by the arm and put the gun against her neck.

“Back.”

Everyone stopped.

Daniel lay on the floor gasping.

Vivien looked at her brother.

Then at Enzo.

“You shot him.”

“He became inconvenient.”

Something in her face emptied.

Elena understood exactly what disappeared.

The last excuse.

Enzo backed toward the stairwell with Vivien.

Dante’s voice was calm.

“You won’t make it out.”

“I only need an elevator to the garage.”

“They’re shut down.”

“I have overrides.”

Of course he did.

Elena looked at Vivien.

Vivien looked back.

Her left hand hung near her dress pocket.

The phone.

Still recording.

Elena moved her eyes toward it.

Vivien understood.

Enzo pulled her toward the service elevator.

Dante shifted.

Enzo pressed the gun harder.

“Try it.”

Dante stopped.

Elena said, “You cannot sell the port.”

Enzo looked at her.

She continued.

“The review is automatic now.”

“Reviews end.”

“The federal accounts do not.”

“You think money frightens me?”

“No.”

Elena took one step forward.

“I think irrelevance does.”

His face changed.

She had found it.

“You killed my father for copying numbers. You threatened my mother for owning paper. You spent fourteen years hiding because you needed everyone to believe you were still powerful.”

“Elena,” Dante warned softly.

She kept going.

“But you are an old man whose nephew stopped fearing him.”

Enzo’s eyes moved to Dante.

“Whose niece just walked away.”

Alessandra lifted her chin.

“Whose accountant left evidence.”

Sofia stepped beside Elena.

“Whose partners are dead or cooperating.”

Marcus joined them.

“And whose money is frozen.”

Enzo’s hand tightened.

Vivien moved.

She drove her heel backward into his shin and dropped.

Dante crossed the distance.

The gun fired.

Glass shattered.

Then Marcus tackled Vivien out of the way.

Dante struck Enzo’s wrist.

The weapon skidded under a desk.

For one terrible second, Dante had Enzo by the throat.

The old man clawed at his arm.

Dante’s face became someone Elena had not seen before.

Young Dante.

The man who broke hands.

The son Antonio tried to turn into a weapon.

“Dante.”

He did not hear her.

“Dante.”

His grip tightened.

Enzo’s face darkened.

Elena stepped closer.

“You promised another way if there was one.”

Dante’s eyes found hers.

The room held still.

Then his hand opened.

Enzo fell to the floor coughing.

Federal agents rushed from the stairwell seconds later.

They put Enzo in handcuffs.

Dante stepped away.

His hands shook.

Elena had never seen them shake.

On the floor, Daniel looked up at Vivien.

She knelt beside him.

“Stay awake.”

He whispered, “Did I get him?”

Vivien began to cry.

“No.”

Daniel looked confused.

She took his hand.

“We did something better.”

Sirens rose below.

Dante stood alone near the broken window.

Elena walked toward him.

He looked at her.

“I almost killed him.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted to.”

“I know.”

He looked ashamed.

She did not tell him it was all right.

It was not.

Instead she said, “And you stopped.”

Dante closed his eyes.

That was not absolution.

It was simply the truth.

Then an agent approached holding Vivien’s phone.

“It recorded everything.”

Elena looked at Enzo.

The old man’s face finally changed.

For the first time, he seemed afraid.

The agent continued.

“There’s more. Mercer’s phone connected to Enzo’s offshore account before the shooting. We have the transfer chain.”

Alessandra sat down.

Marcus let out a breath.

Sofia took Elena’s hand.

The war that began before Elena was old enough to understand money was finally becoming evidence instead of inheritance.

But as agents led Enzo away, he looked back at Dante and smiled.

“Tell her about the restaurant in Cicero.”

Elena felt Dante go still.

Enzo’s smile widened.

“You gave her the edited version.”

Then he disappeared into the elevator.

Elena turned toward Dante.

“What restaurant?”

May you like

Dante’s face told her the answer would hurt.

And Elena knew the last secret between them had just been dragged into the light.
