Marcus Finally Tells the Whole Lie

Chapter 11 - Marcus Finally Tells the Whole Lie

The federal safe house smelled like burnt coffee and wet coats.

Marcus sat at a kitchen table with butterfly bandages over his eyebrow.

Vivien sat across from him.

They had been husband and wife for less than thirty hours.

They looked like strangers waiting for the same delayed flight.

Elena stood by the sink.

Dante and Alessandra argued in the next room with the door closed.

Their voices stayed low.

That somehow made it worse.

Marcus watched Elena.

“I’m sorry.”

She poured herself coffee.

“You will need a more specific sentence.”

“For all of it.”

“That is less specific.”

He nodded.

“I knew my father killed Miguel before I met you.”

“Yes.”

“I knew your mother was being threatened.”

“Yes.”

“I knew Vivien and Daniel were laundering money before I ended our engagement.”

Elena turned.

“That part is new.”

Marcus looked down.

“I found the invoices two weeks before you did.”

“Then why let me keep investigating?”

“I thought if you found them independently, I could use your audit as cover to go to federal investigators.”

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

Everyone was becoming remarkably comfortable saying that.

Elena sat.

“Continue.”

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Daniel found out I had copied records. He showed me photographs of your mother and threatened to send Enzo after her.”

“So you framed me.”

“Yes.”

“You let them publish the hotel photograph.”

“Yes.”

“You told the board I had been emotionally unstable.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

“You told my closest friends I was obsessed with you.”

“Yes.”

“Did you believe any of it?”

“No.”

“That almost makes it worse.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

The man she had planned to marry.

There had been mornings when Marcus brought coffee to her desk simply because she forgot to eat breakfast. Nights when he held her after her mother’s surgery. Eight birthdays. Two apartments. A thousand small kindnesses.

None of those memories disappeared.

Neither did what he had done.

“Why marry Vivien?”

Marcus looked across the table at his wife.

“At first, because Daniel demanded it.”

Vivien stared at him.

“At first?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Elena knew before he said it.

“I slept with her before you and I officially ended.”

Vivien looked away.

Elena waited for pain.

It came.

Smaller than she expected.

Older pain had different teeth.

“How long before?”

“Six weeks.”

“Did she force you?”

“No.”

“Did Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then that part was yours.”

“Yes.”

Marcus’s voice broke.

“I was terrified. My mother was sick. Daniel was threatening Sofia. You kept asking questions I could not answer. Vivien knew everything and did not make me explain.”

Elena nodded slowly.

“So you chose comfort.”

“Yes.”

“While I was losing my mind trying to understand why you suddenly hated me.”

“Yes.”

He began to cry.

Elena did not.

That surprised both of them.

“I loved you,” Marcus whispered.

“I believe you.”

He looked up.

The answer hurt him more than disbelief would have.

Elena continued.

“But love did not prevent you from humiliating me when fear asked for something easier.”

Marcus lowered his head.

She looked at Vivien.

“And you?”

Vivien’s hands tightened.

“I wanted him.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I knew he still loved you. I hated that. I told myself you were strong enough to recover.”

Elena laughed.

“What a generous way to justify cruelty.”

“I know.”

Vivien swallowed.

“I also believed if Marcus married me, Daniel would leave you alone.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“So you got what you wanted and nobody was safer.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

There was something almost clean about the ugliness once everyone stopped decorating it.

The door opened.

Dante entered.

Alessandra behind him.

She looked furious.

Marcus straightened.

Dante said, “Tell them.”

Alessandra folded her arms.

“I met Enzo before the wedding.”

Elena waited.

“I approached him.”

“Why?” Sofia asked from the couch.

“To make him believe I wanted to sell.”

Dante’s voice was cold.

“You did not tell me.”

“No.”

“You told Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was working for me then.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No. There is more.”

Alessandra glared.

Marcus continued.

“You gave Enzo the date of the wedding.”

Elena frowned.

“Why would that matter?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because he wanted everyone in one room.”

Dante went still.

“The ballroom.”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

Marcus looked at Alessandra.

She said nothing.

Dante’s face changed.

“What did you plan?”

Alessandra’s confidence finally cracked.

“I thought Enzo would come.”

“You used the wedding as a trap.”

“Yes.”

“With three hundred civilians inside.”

“He was not supposed to attack.”

“What was he supposed to do?”

“Meet Daniel in the service corridor.”

Dante stared.

“And?”

“Daniel was supposed to record him.”

“But Daniel had already switched sides.”

“Yes.”

Elena understood.

“That is why he put my flash drive in Vivien’s bouquet.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He wanted federal investigators to reopen the case before the meeting.”

Alessandra nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“He wanted pressure on Enzo.”

“Yes.”

“And Dante showing up with me made Enzo think the Reyes shares were already aligned against him.”

“Yes.”

“So all of you turned my ex-fiancé’s wedding into a boardroom with flowers.”

Nobody argued.

Elena stood.

“I am going to sleep for twelve hours.”

Dante said, “Elena—”

“No.”

He stopped.

She walked toward the hallway.

Marcus called after her.

“There’s one more thing.”

She closed her eyes.

“Of course there is.”

Marcus reached into his torn jacket.

He removed a small memory card.

“Daniel missed this when he searched me.”

“What is it?”

“The original recording.”

Sofia stood.

“Enzo ordering Miguel’s death?”

“Yes.”

Elena walked back.

Marcus placed it on the table.

“But that is not why I hid it.”

“Why?”

“Because there is another conversation after it.”

Dante looked at him.

“Between who?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Antonio Salvatore and Miguel.”

Dante’s face hardened.

“What did my father say?”

Marcus looked at Elena.

“Antonio offered Miguel a deal.”

“What deal?”

“He would keep Sofia and Elena safe if Miguel did one last thing.”

Elena’s stomach tightened.

“What?”

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“Kill Enzo.”

Sofia whispered, “Miguel would never.”

Marcus looked at her.

“He agreed.”

Silence filled the room.

Then Marcus said the part that changed everything again.

“And Dante was supposed to help him do it.”
