Samuel's Map

Chapter 09 - Samuel's Map

Back at the house, dawn found them all older.

Evelyn slept under guard in the medical room, her hand wrapped around Adrian's sleeve until exhaustion finally loosened her fingers. Adrian remained beside her until Dr. Rinaldi threatened to sedate him too if he did not let the woman rest.

Anna sat in the kitchen with a cup of coffee she never drank.

Bianca sat across from her.

No one had planned that seating arrangement. Life sometimes arranges enemies at the same table because it has run out of separate rooms.

Bianca looked ruined in the clean morning light. Without the armor of perfect hair and silk clothes, she was a woman in her late thirties who had carried a locked room inside her chest for too long.

Anna wanted to hate her neatly.

She could not.

"Did you know about my father?" Anna asked.

Bianca stared at the table. "I knew he was alive after he disappeared. For a while."

"For a while."

"Salvatore moved him between properties. Father wanted him dead. I begged for his life because Samuel knew about my son." She swallowed. "After Carlo faked his death, I lost track of him."

"Convenient."

Bianca looked up. "Yes. It was. I have lived on convenient cowardice for years."

Honesty did not make Anna forgive her.

It made forgiveness more complicated.

Adrian entered with Marco carrying a rolled set of old plans wrapped in oilcloth.

"These were behind the beam marked with your father's initials," Adrian told Anna. "Not architectural drawings. A cipher."

Anna stood.

The plans covered the kitchen table when unrolled: sketches of the estate, but not as any architect would draw them. Samuel Price had marked walls with small carpenter's symbols, arrows hidden in decorative borders, measurements disguised as notes about floor joists.

Anna recognized his handwriting immediately.

Tears came before she could stop them.

In the lower corner, her father had written: If Anna ever sees this, tell her I kept my promise to come home. I just took the long way.

Anna pressed her fist to her mouth.

Adrian waited.

That restraint nearly undid her. Men like him were supposed to demand. Command. Fill grief with action because silence made them uneasy. He let the silence stand.

When Anna could see again, she followed the markings.

"This is not a map of the house," she said.

"No?"

"It's a map out of it. Look. These lines run away from the estate. Here, through the old drainage tunnel. Then west." She traced the page. "To Saint Brigid's."

Bianca went white.

"What?" Adrian asked.

"A convent school," Bianca said. "Closed now. Father used it for meetings years ago."

Anna shook her head. "My father wrote something beside it."

The pencil had faded, but she could make out the words.

Where the stolen children sleep.

Evelyn appeared in the doorway then, wrapped in a robe, leaning on Dr. Rinaldi's arm.

Adrian moved toward her. "You should be resting."

"I rested for three years," she said. "I am finished with rooms other people choose for me."

No one argued.

She came to the table and looked at the map. Her eyes moved over Samuel's marks with strange recognition.

"He talked about bells," she said. "Samuel. When he came through the passage. He told me if I ever got free and couldn't trust the roads, to listen for bells underground. I thought he was feverish."

Anna found another symbol near Saint Brigid's.

A bell.

Marco was already on the phone organizing cars, men, weapons, medical support, and whatever else a mafia family took when visiting a closed convent that might contain stolen children and a missing carpenter.

Bianca stood slowly.

"I'm coming."

Adrian did not look at her. "No."

"My son may be there."

"Or you may warn them."

Bianca's face tightened, but she accepted the blow because she deserved it.

Then Anna surprised herself.

"Let her come."

Adrian turned.

Anna folded the corner of the map carefully. "If there are children there, and one of them is hers, he may not trust strangers with guns. He might trust his mother."

Bianca's eyes filled.

Anna looked away before that gratitude could ask too much of her.

May you like

By noon, they were on the road to Saint Brigid's.

And in the back seat, Evelyn took Adrian's hand for the first time by choice.
