The Recording in the Mitten

Chapter 11 - The Recording in the Mitten

The memory card was smaller than my thumbnail.

It looked impossible that something so tiny could frighten a man like Dominic Bellini. Yet the moment Nico placed it in Luca’s hand, Dominic aged ten years.

Not visibly enough for the guests he charmed at galas.

Enough for those of us who had learned to read ruins in the face.

“Where did you get this?” Luca asked Nico.

“Rosa,” the boy said. “She said if the red lady got scared, give it to Uncle Luca.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The red lady.

Children remember colors before motives.

Luca knelt to Nico’s height. “You did well.”

Nico looked at him carefully. “Are you going to send Miss V away?”

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

Luca did not look at her. “Adults who do wrong have to answer for it.”

Nico’s lower lip trembled. “But she brought soup when I was sick.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying now, silently, and for the first time I did not think the tears were meant to persuade anyone.

Luca said, “We can remember the soup and still tell the truth.”

It was the kindest sentence I had heard him speak.

Nico nodded, though he did not understand all of it. I did.

Maybe that was why it hurt.

Marco loaded the memory card into the laptop. A video file appeared. The image was dim and sideways at first, filmed from somewhere low, perhaps a kitchen shelf in the West Addison house.

Mrs. Alvarez’s voice whispered in the background. “Nico, play in your room.”

Then Dominic appeared on screen.

Enzo stood with him.

Vanessa was there too, younger by six months, furious and pale.

Dominic said, “After the wedding, we petition for guardianship through Vanessa. Luca signs the trust consolidation thinking it is a marital asset restructure. Enzo confirms the internal Moretti records.”

Vanessa’s voice shook. “And Nico?”

“He goes to Switzerland.”

“No.”

Dominic turned to her. “You are confusing attachment with morality. You were asked to visit the boy so he would accept you.”

Vanessa said, “He calls me Mom.”

Enzo laughed. “Then he’s obedient.”

On the screen, Vanessa slapped him.

Hard.

In the study, no one moved.

The video continued.

Dominic grabbed Vanessa’s wrist. “You will marry Luca. You will smile. You will remove the old driver before he connects West Addison to you. And if the maid finds anything, Enzo will handle her.”

My father’s hand found mine.

The recording ended.

For several seconds, the only sound was Nico breathing through his mouth because his nose was stuffed from crying.

Then Vanessa said, “I tried to tell you.”

Luca turned.

“When?”

“The night I asked Sal to drive me. I was going to bring Nico to you. But when Sal waited outside, Enzo’s man saw the car. I panicked. My father called before I got home.”

“So you fired Sal.”

“I tried to get him out before they hurt him.”

“You also lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You humiliated him.”

“Yes.”

“You would have married me while hiding my nephew.”

Her answer took a long time.

“Yes.”

No excuse followed.

That silence did more for her than all her explanations had.

Luca stood. “The engagement is over.”

Vanessa nodded once.

Dominic finally spoke. “You think ending an engagement ends an empire?”

“No,” Luca said. “But it ends your access to mine.”

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

Dominic looked toward the window, surprised.

Vanessa lifted her phone. “I called them before breakfast.”

Her father stared at her.

She looked terribly young then, standing in the wreckage of the woman he had made.

“You told me courage was a luxury,” she said. “You were wrong. Cowardice is. Other people pay for it.”

Dominic moved so fast I barely saw him raise his hand.

He did not reach Vanessa.

Sal stepped between them.

The old driver caught Dominic’s wrist with both hands and held on.

“You don’t touch children,” Sal said. “Not yours. Not his. Not anyone’s.”

The police entered with federal agents behind them, and for once, no one in Luca Moretti’s house seemed able to buy the room back.

But as Dominic was led away, he looked at Luca and smiled.

“You still haven’t read the forged marriage filing,” he said.

Vanessa went white.

May you like

Luca turned slowly toward her.

“What filing?”
