The Contract Beneath the Ring

Chapter 12 - The Contract Beneath the Ring
Luca told me in the chapel room.
Perhaps because lies had done enough damage there. Perhaps because his mother's blue candles still sat unlit beneath the Virgin's calm gaze. Perhaps because the room smelled faintly of wax and old paper, and some truths require witnesses who cannot interrupt.
I stood near the window with Bruno asleep across my shoes.
Luca stood by the safe his mother had emptied and filled and outwitted from the grave.
"When my mother became ill," he said, "my father tried to stabilize the legitimate businesses. Hotels, shipping, restaurants, real estate. He created a board to keep federal pressure away from family operations. Bellini money came in through several trusts. On paper, it was clean."
"And in reality?"
"In reality, Aldo Bellini bought leverage. If his family merged with ours through marriage, the trusts remained silent. If not, certain clauses activated."
"What kind of clauses?"
"Control clauses. Voting rights. Debt calls. Ownership reviews. A beautiful legal gun pointed at my head."
I looked out at the rain-dark conservatory roof.
"So you agreed to marry Vanessa."
"I agreed to consider it. Then she made herself useful. Charming. Strategic. She knew what to say to my father. She knew what histories to avoid."
"Because she already knew them."
"Yes."
I turned back.
"Did you love her?"
The question surprised us both.
Luca answered carefully.
"I believed I could build something tolerable with her."
"That is not love."
"No."
"Then why wear the ring? Why let her live here? Why put Bruno near her?"
His face tightened at Bruno's name.
"Because I underestimated her."
"No," I said, more sharply than I intended. "Because you overestimated yourself."
He looked at me.
I had crossed a line. Employees do not speak to men like Luca Moretti that way.
But I was tired of lines drawn by people who never bled crossing them.
"You thought you could control the bargain," I said. "Control Vanessa. Control your father. Control the board. Control the truth."
His voice was quiet. "You're right."
I had expected anger.
His agreement left me with nowhere to put mine.
"What happens now?"
"If I don't marry Vanessa by midnight tomorrow, the Bellini trusts can trigger a vote. Several board members loyal to my father may use the chaos to take control of the legitimate companies. Thousands of employees could lose jobs if assets freeze."
"Including staff here."
"Yes."
"Including me."
"You will be protected regardless."
The words landed wrong.
I stepped away from the window.
"Protected is not the same as employed."
"Emma—"
"No. Listen to me. Vanessa was cruel and dangerous, but she knew where to aim. Poor people always become the leverage in rich people's wars. You lose a company, you call a lawyer. Mrs. Carter loses a paycheck, she loses her son's medication coverage. The kitchen girls lose hours, they miss rent. I lose work, my mother skips follow-up appointments."
His expression shifted.
"I know."
"Do you?"
He looked toward the blue candles.
"My mother tried to teach me. I listened when it was convenient."
That honesty again.
It kept undoing my anger by refusing to fight fair.
The chapel door opened.
Daniel entered with a folder.
"Boss. We went through the trust documents. Vanessa wasn't lying, but she left something out."
Luca took the folder.
"What?"
"The clause requires marriage to a Bellini woman approved by the Bellini Foundation board. It doesn't specify Vanessa."
I frowned.
"There are other Bellini women?"
Daniel's mouth twitched without humor.
"One. Isabella knew her."
Luca flipped the page.
Then stopped.
"No."
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"It's legally possible."
"Absolutely not."
"Who?" I asked.
Luca closed the folder.
"No one."
Daniel sighed. "Boss."
"I said no."
The room went tight.
I looked from one man to the other.
"What am I missing?"
Daniel glanced at Luca, then at me.
"Margaret Hale Collins."
For a second, I did not understand.
Then my blood went cold.
"My mother?"
Luca's voice was hard. "No."
Daniel spoke gently. "Not by birth name. By adoption record. We found sealed documents Isabella copied. Margaret was Aldo Bellini's illegitimate daughter. Her mother gave her up before Aldo married. Isabella found out when Margaret worked at the estate."
The floor seemed to move.
"No."
"Emma," Luca said.
"No. My mother would have told me."
Daniel's face said he wished that were true.
"She may not know."
I sat down on the kneeler because my legs had stopped understanding me.
Bruno lifted his head, concerned.
My mother.
A Bellini.
The woman Vanessa had threatened and mocked.
The woman Aldo's family would have erased twice if Isabella had not hidden proof under quilts and dog blankets.
"What does that mean for the contract?" I asked.
Luca's answer came immediately.
"Nothing."
Daniel said, "It means the board could approve Margaret as the Bellini family representative if she asserted lineage."
"She is ill," Luca snapped. "She is grieving. She is not a tool."
The force in his voice shook me.
He was refusing the easy solution before I even fully saw it.
Daniel held his ground.
"I'm not suggesting marriage. There may be another route. A family representative can challenge the foundation's authority if fraud is proven. Margaret doesn't need to marry anyone. She needs to exist legally."
Luca went silent.
I pressed one hand to my mouth.
"So Vanessa tried to frighten my mother because my mother can break the contract."
"Yes," Daniel said.
"And Aldo Bellini hid her because she was inconvenient."
"Yes."
"And Isabella knew."
Daniel looked at Luca.
Luca looked at the safe.
"My mother didn't just hide a ledger," he said. "She hid an heir."
My phone rang.
This time it was my mother.
I answered with shaking hands.
"Mom?"
Her voice sounded strangely calm.
"Emma, honey. I need you to come to the hotel."
"What's wrong?"
A pause.
"There is a woman here. She says she is Vanessa's aunt."
Luca straightened.
May you like
My mother's voice trembled.
"She says she knew my real mother."
