Chapter 14 - The Choice

Dante wanted to handle the rescue alone.

Leah refused.

For once, he listened.

They traced Marco's signal to an abandoned warehouse near the river.

Adrian and Elena coordinated with investigators while Dante and Leah entered through a side door.

They found Nora tied to a chair but unharmed.

Marco was waiting.

He told Leah the truth.

The corruption had started decades earlier.

Bianca had spent years trying to dismantle it.

Leah's mother had helped.

Dante had finished the work.

Marco was the last man standing.

He wanted the ledger because it contained enough evidence to destroy him—or clear his name.

Leah realized then that the missing page was not evidence of Bianca's guilt.

It was evidence that Bianca had paid to expose Marco.

She had deliberately left a trail.

Dante had misunderstood her final plan.

Marco raised the ledger.

“You want your sister? Give me the original.”

Leah stepped forward.

“No.”

Dante looked at her.

She smiled faintly.

“I'm done trading pieces of my life for people who think fear is protection.”

She had already sent copies of the ledger to investigators.

Marco realized too late.

Sirens sounded outside.

He tried to run.

Dante stopped him.

There was no dramatic fight.

No revenge.

Just the quiet finality of a man who had spent years waiting for the law to catch up with someone who believed he was untouchable.

Afterward, Nora held Leah for a long time.

Dante stood several feet away.

He did not interrupt.

That was when Leah understood the last lesson.

Dante was finally learning to love without possessing.

Weeks later, the Raviieri estate became quieter.

The foundation opened.

Leah moved into her own apartment.

Nora joined her.

Elena became the foundation's legal director.

And Dante visited only when invited.

One evening, months later, Leah found him waiting outside the foundation office.

He held no flowers.

No documents.

No demands.

Only a cup of coffee.

“Still cold?” he asked.

Leah smiled.

“Probably.”

He laughed.

Then she reached for his hand.

This time, nobody told her what the relationship was supposed to be.

But before they could take a single step together, Dante's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The caller ID read Bianca Raviieri.

Leah's breath caught.

Bianca had been dead for nearly two years.
