Victor at the Gate

Chapter 07 - Victor at the Gate

Victor Santos looked too polished to be trouble.

Clean blue pickup. Pressed chambray shirt. Silver watch. Trimmed beard. If he walked into a church fundraiser, half the women in town would ask who his people were.

But Ethan straightened when Victor stepped from the truck.

Fear recognizes its owner.

The deputy moved to the gate. “Sir, this is an active police matter.”

Victor smiled. “I was invited.”

“No,” Claire said. “You weren’t.”

His eyes moved over her. “Claire Bennett.”

She did not answer.

Men like Victor heard silence and mistook it for room.

June’s sedan pulled up behind him. Claire exhaled for the first time in minutes.

June Mallory stepped out in a navy suit, silver hair cut neat at her jaw, glasses on a chain. “Mr. Santos,” she said. “Clarification happens through counsel.”

Victor’s smile thinned. “And you are?”

“The woman who will be making your week inconvenient.”

Miriam chuckled.

Victor produced a folder. “I have an agreement with Mr. Harper.”

June read it under the porch light. Her face changed on the last page.

“Ethan,” she said, “you assigned five years of future rental proceeds from Magnolia Lane in exchange for debt forgiveness.”

Claire went cold.

Ethan rushed in. “I thought the deed would go through.”

“Your thoughts do not create ownership,” June said.

She flipped another page and looked at him as if he had become a stain on her shoe.

“You also listed Claire’s retirement account as substitute collateral.”

Claire stared at Ethan.

“You gave him my financial statements?”

“They were in the desk,” Ethan said, and then seemed to hear himself.

“In my desk.”

The betrayal widened beyond the porch. House, savings, records, future. Ethan had not simply left her. He had inventoried her.

Victor shrugged. “Collateral review is standard.”

“Stealing confidential documents is not,” June said.

The deputy kept the folder.

Megan suddenly made a soft sound and gripped the railing. Claire turned despite herself.

“I’m fine,” Megan said too fast.

Linda moved toward her. “This is what stress does. Claire, look what you’re doing to your sister.”

Megan pulled away from Linda. “Don’t.”

The word landed harder than shouting.

Victor watched with interest.

Then he said, “You can all fight about feelings later. I came for a payment arrangement.”

Claire faced him.

“No.”

His eyes sharpened. “No?”

“No payment. No arrangement. No porch. No rental income. No retirement account. No house.”

Ethan whispered, “Claire, please.”

“You should have pleaded before you handed a lender my future.”

Victor’s smile changed. “Fine. You want legal? Let’s be legal.”

He pointed at Megan.

“Ask her whose name is on the prenatal bill I paid last month.”

Megan closed her eyes.

Ethan’s face crumpled with understanding.

Claire looked from Victor to her sister.

The baby had become the next claim.
