The First Mother

Chapter 05 - The First Mother

A dusty Subaru pulled up before anyone could gather a decent lie.

The woman who climbed out was in her late seventies, silver hair braided down her back, cane in hand, raincoat buttoned though the sky was clear. She looked at the boxes, the deputy, the forged paper, and said, “Well. Evelyn called this one right from the cemetery.”

Robert whispered, “Miriam.”

Linda stepped back as if she had seen a ghost.

Miriam Vale came through the gate without asking permission.

“You must be Claire,” she said. “You have Evelyn’s eyes.”

“And you have my grandmother’s secrets?”

“Only the ones she trusted me to keep until your family grew foolish enough to need them.”

Under different circumstances, Claire might have liked her.

Megan stepped forward. “What birth certificate?”

Miriam’s sharp face softened. “Yours, honey.”

“Don’t honey me.”

“Fair enough.” Miriam reached into her leather bag and removed a folder sealed in plastic. “Your legal birth certificate is not the first one filed.”

Megan stared.

Linda said, “Miriam, I swear—”

“If I tell the truth?” Miriam cut in. “Linda, you’ve been threatening honest people for forty years. Has it brought you peace?”

Nobody breathed.

Miriam looked at Megan. “Linda and Robert are your legal parents. But for the first eleven months of your life, your mother of record was Celia Carter.”

Claire knew the name only from one old photograph. A laughing girl by a lake, hair flying, her album page always closed quickly by Linda.

Megan whispered, “Celia was my mother?”

“Yes,” Miriam said. “Linda’s younger cousin. She died after you were born.”

Linda snapped, “Celia abandoned her.”

Miriam’s cane struck the sidewalk once. “Celia died. Don’t make me correct you twice.”

Megan swayed.

Claire reached out on instinct, then stopped. Megan did not take her hand.

Miriam handed Claire the folder because Megan could not seem to move.

Inside was a certified copy of the original certificate.

Megan Celia Carter.

Mother: Celia Anne Carter.

Father: Unknown.

Behind it was a note from Evelyn.

If Linda tries to use Megan to take the house, tell Megan the rest: Magnolia Lane was bought partly with Celia’s settlement money. Megan has a moral claim, but never a legal one unless Claire gives it freely.

Claire looked up.

Megan’s face went blank.

“This house,” Megan said, “was bought with money from my mother?”

“Partly,” Miriam said. “Money paid after the Pike Mill accident.”

Ethan shifted. “What accident?”

Miriam’s gaze turned cold on him.

“The accident your father helped cover up.”

Ethan went still.

Derek, by the patrol car, muttered, “What the hell does Dad have to do with this?”

Miriam looked from Ethan to Megan to Claire.

“More than any of you are ready for.”

The sunset finally dropped behind the trees.

The house stood warm and beautiful behind them, carrying more ghosts than furniture.

And Claire understood the forged deed was only the newest page in a story someone had buried before she was born.
