A Dead Brother's Story

Chapter 08 - A Dead Brother's Story

Marcus did not get to enter Noah's room.

Claire made that decision before anyone else could. Whatever blood connected Marcus to her son, Noah was still recovering, still small beneath hospital blankets, still a child who had asked if he had been bad.

"You can talk in the family room," she said. "Not near him."

Marcus accepted it with a nod.

Daniel did not.

"Your son?" Daniel snapped, turning on Marcus. "You disappear for six years and walk in claiming my child?"

Marcus's face tightened. "I didn't disappear. I was put away."

The family room smelled like old coffee and disinfectant. A television played silently in the corner. Claire sat nearest the door. Vanessa stood by the window. Dr. Marsh remained in the hall, close enough to intervene.

Marianne refused to sit.

Marcus looked older in the fluorescent light, not mysterious, just tired. There was a scar near his hairline. His left hand trembled faintly when he folded it over his knee.

"I didn't die after surgery," he said. "I woke up in a private rehab facility two states away. My memory was damaged. The paperwork said I had no living family authorized for release."

Daniel stared at Marianne.

She looked at the wall.

"Dad did that?" Daniel asked.

Marcus's jaw flexed. "Walter signed the papers. Marianne knew."

"Why?"

Marcus looked at Claire. "Because I found out what they were doing at the clinic. Donor samples. Changed consent forms. Couples who thought they were receiving one treatment and got another. Walter had money in the clinic through a shell company."

Claire felt sick.

"Noah."

"I didn't know about Noah until last year," Marcus said softly. "I knew samples had been taken. I didn't know they used mine for you."

Marianne broke then, not with remorse, but irritation. "You always were dramatic. We saved the family. Daniel needed an heir. Claire wanted a baby. Everyone got what they wanted."

"No," Claire said. "You got what you wanted. The rest of us were used."

Daniel sat with his elbows on his knees, head in his hands.

For the first time, Claire wondered whether he had ever truly been loved by his parents, or only managed.

It did not excuse him.

But it explained the hollow place he kept trying to fill with women who needed him.

Marcus turned to Vanessa. "Walter hurt more people than you. I have records. Some I stole before the accident. Some a nurse kept for me."

Vanessa's eyes filled. "Was Lily his?"

Marcus hesitated.

"I believe so."

Vanessa closed her eyes, holding herself upright by the windowsill.

Claire wanted to hate Daniel for choosing Lily, but now Lily had become another child buried under Whitmore lies. The anger remained. It simply widened.

Everett Sloan entered without knocking.

"Mr. Whitmore," he said to Marcus, "you should be careful. False claims can be costly."

Marcus smiled without warmth. "So can real evidence."

He opened his coat and pulled out a flash drive on a key ring.

Marianne lunged for it.

Daniel caught her wrist.

The room froze.

Mother and son looked at each other, both stunned by his grip.

He released her immediately, but the line had been crossed.

"What did you do?" Daniel whispered.

Marianne's face twisted. "Everything I did, I did for you."

"No," Daniel said. "You did it so you could own me."

Claire stood. "Give the drive to the police."

Marcus looked at her. "There's one file you should see first."

"Why?"

May you like

His eyes moved toward Noah's room.

"Because Walter planned to take custody of Noah before he was born."
