The Man Outside the Hospital

Chapter 07 - The Man Outside the Hospital

Claire stared at the photograph until the edges of her phone blurred.

Marcus Whitmore stood beneath the hospital's covered entrance, older than in every picture she had ever seen. His hair was longer, threaded with gray at the temples. A knit cap shadowed part of his face, but there was no mistaking him.

The same quiet eyes. The same crooked left shoulder from the football injury Daniel used to tease him about. The same gentleness that had once made Claire feel safe at Whitmore dinners when every other smile had teeth.

"That's impossible," Vanessa whispered.

Claire almost laughed. Impossible had become a tired word.

Dr. Marsh looked at the photo, then toward the elevator. "Who sent it?"

"Unknown number."

Another message appeared.

Don't let Marianne take the boy.

Claire's knees weakened.

Not Noah. The boy.

Like whoever sent it knew exactly whose blood ran through him.

Security radioed up that Daniel and Marianne were in the lobby with two officers and a private attorney. Dr. Marsh moved quickly, her calm sharpening into command. She spoke to the charge nurse, then to hospital legal, then told Claire to stay inside Noah's room and not engage.

"Can they remove him?" Claire asked.

"Not without a discharge order," Dr. Marsh said. "And they won't get one from me."

For the first time all night, Claire believed someone in authority was on her side.

That did not last long.

The elevator opened, and Marianne stepped out like she owned the floor. Daniel followed, pale and strained, carrying a folder. Everett Sloan walked behind them with the expression of a man who had never lost a room he intended to control.

"Claire," Daniel said, "we need to talk."

"You keep saying that after acting first."

Marianne looked past her into the room. "That child is a Whitmore."

Claire stepped into the doorway. "That child is mine."

Everett held out the court order. "Mrs. Whitmore, refusing reasonable paternal access will not help your position."

Vanessa moved beside Claire. "Is that what Walter told women too? That refusing wouldn't help their position?"

Marianne's face went white.

Everett's eyes flashed.

Daniel looked between them. "What is she talking about?"

"Ask your mother," Claire said.

Before Marianne could answer, a man stepped from the stairwell.

The hallway went silent.

Marcus Whitmore removed his knit cap.

Daniel made a sound like his childhood had been punched out of him.

Marianne whispered, "No."

Marcus looked at Claire first. Not Daniel. Not his mother. Claire.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I should have come sooner."

Daniel took one shaky step toward him. "You're dead."

Marcus's mouth tightened. "That's what she needed everyone to believe."

Marianne backed into Everett, and for the first time in her life, she looked less like a matriarch than a frightened accomplice.

Marcus lifted his eyes to Noah's room.

"I came for my son," he said.

Claire's hand tightened on the doorframe.

And every lie the Whitmores had buried rose up at once.
