The Last Debt

Chapter 15 - The Last Debt
Warehouse 17 was dark when they arrived.
Again.
Isabella would have preferred never seeing it again.
Alessandro parked behind a row of containers while Shaw's vehicles approached from the opposite road.
"No heroics," Alessandro said.
She looked at him.
"Which one of us broke federal release conditions to come to a gala?"
"My release conditions allow movement with counsel."
"Bianca is not your criminal attorney."
"She knows one."
"Alessandro."
He almost smiled.
"I missed this."
The warmth of it hurt.
They found Thomas's car near the river fence.
The driver's door was open.
Blood marked the steering wheel.
Isabella stopped.
"No."
Alessandro checked the ground.
"Not much."
"How is that reassuring?"

"It means he walked away."
A light came on inside the warehouse.
Petrov's voice echoed through the open loading bay.
"Come in, Isabella."
Alessandro swore.
"You stay here."
She stared at him.
He exhaled.
"Right. Growth."
"Painful, isn't it?"
"Exhausting."
They entered together.
Thomas sat against a steel post.
Blood soaked one sleeve.
Alive.
Matteo stood several feet away with his hands raised.
Petrov held the gun.
"You've made my evening very expensive," Petrov said.
Alessandro looked at Thomas.
"Can you move?"
"Eventually."
Petrov laughed.
"Always business."
His gun shifted toward Isabella.
Alessandro moved half a step.
"Don't."
Petrov's eyes brightened.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The weakness."
Alessandro went still.
Petrov smiled.
"Your father spent years teaching you not to have one."
Isabella understood then.
Men like Petrov saw love only as leverage.
A mother.
A cousin.
A woman at a gala.
Every human attachment became a handle.
She stepped away from Alessandro.
Petrov tracked her with the gun.
"Isabella."
Alessandro's voice warned.
She kept moving.
"You want the original evidence?"
Petrov's smile disappeared.
"It's not here."
"No."
She touched the brass key at her neck.
"But I know where it is."
Matteo looked at her.
He knew she was lying.
Petrov did not.
"Tell me."
"Let Thomas go."
"He's a gambler who sold you for debt."
Thomas flinched.
Isabella looked at him.
"He failed me."
She turned back to Petrov.
"That doesn't mean you get to decide what he's worth."
Thomas's eyes filled.
Petrov's gun shifted slightly.
That was all Matteo needed.
He lunged.
The gun fired.
Thomas threw himself sideways.
Alessandro dragged Isabella behind a crate.
Shaw's team entered through the loading bay.
"Federal agents! Drop it!"
Petrov fired twice more.
Then silence.
When Isabella looked up, Petrov was on the ground.
Alive.
Wounded in the shoulder.
Matteo had a cut across his forehead.
Thomas lay on his side.
"Thomas!"
She ran to him.
The bullet had passed through the muscle of his upper arm.

Painful.
Bloody.
Not fatal.
Her nursing training took over before fear could.
Pressure.
Elevation.
Check pulse.
"Look at me."
Thomas tried to smile.
"You always were bossy."
"Save your energy."
Thomas caught her wrist with his good hand.
"I need to say this while you're angry enough to hear it."
"Thomas—"
"I loved you. I also failed you. Both are true."
His face tightened with pain.
"Don't turn my love into an excuse for what I did."
Isabella swallowed.
"I won't."
"Good."
For the first time, he looked relieved.
"Your mother says that too."
"Then listen to at least one of us."
Across the warehouse, Petrov was being cuffed.
Alessandro stood over him.
Petrov looked up.
"Do it."
Alessandro did not move.
"You know you want to."
Petrov smiled through pain.
"Your father would."
Alessandro's face went empty.
Isabella watched from beside Thomas.
This was the choice.
Not between two criminal organizations.
Not between power and weakness.
Between inheritance and freedom.
Alessandro stepped back.
"Garrett."
Shaw took Petrov.
Petrov's smile vanished.
"You think this makes you clean?"
"No."
Alessandro looked at him.
"It makes you alive to testify."
Matteo laughed despite himself.
Petrov was dragged away.
Voss was already in custody.
The recordings, ledgers, and witness statements were moving simultaneously to prosecutors, the Inspector General, and three news organizations Bianca trusted enough to hate equally.
There would be no burying it now.
Dawn came pale over the river.
An ambulance took Thomas.

Matteo remained with federal agents.
Before they led him away, he stopped in front of Alessandro.
"I am sorry."
Alessandro looked at him.
"For which part?"
"Pick one."
A long silence.
"You could have trusted me."
Matteo's eyes reddened.
"I didn't know how."
"Neither did I."
It was not forgiveness.
Maybe one day.
Shaw approached Alessandro next.
"We need to go."
Isabella's stomach tightened.
"The Petrov case changes things."
Shaw nodded.
"It does."
"But?"
Alessandro answered for him.
"But it doesn't erase mine."
Isabella looked at him.
He had known.
"Financial conspiracy. Obstruction. A list of other things my attorneys will spend months arguing about."
"You helped them."
"After years of helping myself."
He touched her cheek.
"You told me to come back as a man I could live with."
Her eyes burned.
"I didn't mean you had to leave again first."
"I know."
This time, when he kissed her, it was not her forehead.
It was soft.
Brief.
A promise without ownership.
Then he stepped away.
Shaw gave them another moment.
Alessandro reached into his pocket.
He placed something in Isabella's palm.
His steel watch.
"The first night I met you, I thought power meant being able to control what happened next."
She closed her fingers around it.
"And now?"
He looked toward the sunrise beyond the warehouse.

"Now I think it means being willing to answer for what already happened."
He walked toward Shaw's car.
Isabella wanted to ask how long.
When he would call.
What would happen to them.
Instead she let him go.
For the first time, loving someone did not mean trying to keep them from leaving.
It meant trusting what they had chosen to return as.
May you like
The car door closed.
And Isabella had no idea whether the man she loved would be gone for months—or years.
