Chapter 4

“I was terrified, Clara! You don’t know what my father is capable of,” Ethan stammered. “He arrived at headquarters an hour ago. He’s furious with everyone.”

“Then your father can face our legal team directly,” I said evenly. “Tell him Marcus Vance is waiting for him in the federal courthouse.”

“Clara, wait! He’s trying to liquidate the Swiss accounts,” Ethan shouted into the speaker. “He says if we go down, he will burn everything.”

“He won’t burn anything,” I answered firmly. “Because those assets were never his to destroy. Goodbye, Ethan.” I terminated the call without hesitation.

Marcus arrived at our modest house twenty minutes later, accompanied by two forensic accountants and an armed courier holding an ironclad federal injunction.

“Arthur’s withdrawal failed because the bank required biometric verification,” Marcus announced, setting down a heavy briefcase. “We have an emergency injunction hearing at nine.”

“Can we freeze his domestic assets before he moves them?” I asked, reviewing the documentation Marcus spread across the kitchen table.

“The judge has already signed the temporary restraining order,” Marcus smiled faintly. “Now we just need David to walk into court and claim his seat.”

My father looked at the papers, his rough hands trembling slightly as he touched the original stock certificates from thirty years ago.

“I spent thirty years fixing carburetors and lawnmowers,” my father murmured. “I never wanted to sit in a glass tower surrounded by vipers.”

“You aren’t doing this for the glass tower, Dad,” I said gently. “You’re doing this so bullies like the Sterlings never abuse anyone again.”

My mother kissed his cheek and handed him his pressed navy suit. “Put it on, David. It’s time the world learned who really built Sterling Industries.”

By eight-thirty, our convoy of legal representatives arrived outside the metropolitan federal courthouse. News vans and reporters were already swarming the steps.

The scandal from the wedding had gone viral overnight. Millions of people had watched Olivia push my parents into the swimming pool.

Reporters shouted questions as we climbed the granite steps, their camera flashes blinding in the morning light. I kept my chin held high.

Inside the courtroom, Arthur Sterling was already seated at the defense table. At sixty-two, he looked immaculate, sharp-eyed, and utterly devoid of remorse.

Beside him sat Olivia, wrapped in an expensive fur coat, though her trembling hands betrayed the terror behind her dark designer sunglasses.

Ethan sat at the far end of their table, staring at the polished wood, unable to look in our direction as we took our seats.

Arthur leaned over toward us and spoke in a harsh whisper. “You should have stayed in your grease pit, David. You won’t see a dime.”

My father looked at his former partner with steady calmness. “I am not here for money, Arthur. I am here to balance the ledger.”

The bailiff called the court to order, and Judge Eleanor Vance entered the chamber. Her reputation for strict corporate integrity was legendary throughout the state.

“We are here on an emergency petition regarding ownership rights and alleged fraudulent concealment,” Judge Vance stated, adjusting her reading glasses.

Marcus stood up immediately. “Your Honor, we submit newly discovered certified ledgers and original patent filings proving David Devereux is the rightful majority shareholder.”

Arthur’s senior counsel jumped to his feet. “Objection! These documents are decades old and have long exceeded the applicable statute of limitations.”

“Fraudulent concealment tolls the statute, counselor,” Judge Vance countered sharply. “Especially when forged death certificates and offshore trusts are involved.”

The courtroom erupted into whispers. Arthur turned furiously toward his lawyer, his knuckles turning white against the polished mahogany table.

Marcus handed the judge a blue folder. “Here is the document Arthur Sterling filed twenty-eight years ago, declaring David Devereux legally deceased abroad.”

Olivia gasped aloud, turning to Arthur in genuine shock. Even Ethan raised his head, staring at his father with profound horror and disbelief.

“You declared your own partner dead?” Ethan whispered loudly enough for the front row of the gallery to hear. “How could you do that?”

“Silence!” Arthur snapped at his son, his facade of aristocratic dignity cracking into raw, ugly malice. “You know nothing about building an empire!”

Judge Vance banged her gavel hard. “One more outburst from the defense and I will hold you in contempt. Mr. Vance, proceed with your evidence.”

For the next two hours, our forensic team systematically dismantled thirty years of Sterling financial fabrications, tracing stolen royalties directly to offshore dummy corporations.

Every patent, every major corporate acquisition, and every luxury asset owned by the Sterling family had been leveraged against my father’s original genius.

The total value of diverted revenue, calculated with compound interest and punitive damages, exceeded four billion dollars. The defense team sat in stunned silence.

Arthur’s lead attorney leaned over, whispered frantically into his client’s ear, and finally stood up with a defeat evident in his slumped shoulders.
