The Password Nobody Should Have Known

Chapter 07 - The Password Nobody Should Have Known
Nathan looked as if Eleanor had slapped him.
“No,” he said. “Grandmother, no.”
Eleanor studied him with sorrow so restrained it felt sharper than rage. “You knew the password.”
“I set up your tablet after surgery. That’s all.”
Harris’s voice was quiet. “The login came from a device registered to the family office.”
“That could be anyone,” Nathan said.
Meredith folded her hands in front of her. “Well. This is painful.”
Lily heard the satisfaction under the word painful. Meredith had shifted the blade before anyone saw her hand move. One moment the room had leaned toward her guilt. The next, Nathan stood under the chandelier looking like a boy caught with matches.
Julian lowered his eyes, but not fast enough to hide relief.
Eleanor held the phone in her lap. “Nathan, did you erase the footage?”
“No.”
“Did you ask anyone else to?”
“No.”
“Then why does my account point toward your office?”
“I don’t know.”
A weak answer in a room trained to punish weakness.
Meredith sighed. “Mother, Nathan has always wanted more responsibility. Perhaps he thought if tonight went poorly, Julian’s foundation role would be delayed, and the board might look elsewhere.”
Nathan turned on her. “That’s a lie.”
“Is it?” Meredith’s voice was silk. “You told me last month Julian was reckless.”
“Because he is.”
“And you told me the trust should not be placed in his hands.”
“Because it shouldn’t.”
Julian stepped forward. “There it is.”
Nathan’s mouth opened, then closed. He understood too late that defending the truth sounded exactly like admitting motive.
Lily watched Meredith. The woman was too calm. She had prepared this. Not just the accusation against Lily. Not just the pressure on Sophia. Nathan too. A set of doors arranged in advance, each one opening onto someone else’s guilt.
Then Lily remembered the reflection in the hallway video.
The tuxedo. The outline at the end of the hall.
Everyone assumed it was Julian because of the height, the build, the groom’s cut of tuxedo. But Nathan and Julian were cousins. Similar height. Similar posture. Similar hair from behind.
Could it have been Nathan?
Lily looked at him. He was trembling with anger and humiliation, but there was no slipperiness in him. He seemed less like a liar than a man realizing his whole family had been speaking around him for years.
Sophia approached Eleanor. “Mrs. Winthrop, may I see the phone?”
Meredith’s head snapped toward her. “Sophia, this has nothing to do with you.”
Sophia’s laugh was small and bitter. “I’m the bride you tried to legally package. I think I qualify.”
Eleanor handed her the phone.
Sophia read the details. Lily stood beside her, not touching, not interrupting. The old Sophia would have doubted herself to keep the peace. The nurse Sophia had become under fluorescent lights and pressure alarms did not. She scrolled once. Twice. Then stopped.
“This says the device was registered to Family Office East,” Sophia said.
Nathan nodded. “My office.”
“No.” Sophia enlarged the line. “Family Office East Guest Terminal.”
Harris looked over her shoulder. His face changed.
Meredith took one step forward. “That terminal is in Nathan’s office.”
“But it does not require Nathan’s login,” Sophia said. “It requires a guest code.”
Lily felt the room lean.
“Who had the guest code?” Eleanor asked.
Sophia looked at the name attached to the temporary access request.
Audrey Bell.
Audrey made a sound that was almost a laugh and almost a gasp. “That’s absurd.”
Nathan stared at her. “Audrey?”
“I didn’t delete anything.”
“But you requested access?” Harris asked.
Audrey’s lips pressed together.
Meredith spoke before she could. “Audrey helped coordinate wedding logistics. There’s nothing sinister about a family friend assisting.”
Eleanor looked at Audrey. “Then say it. Say you used my password, entered the hallway log, deleted the footage, stole my clutch, planted your bracelet, and framed a guest because you were helping with logistics.”
Audrey’s composure cracked.
“I didn’t know about the medical clause,” she blurted.
Silence crashed into the room.
Julian closed his eyes.
Meredith did not move.
Sophia whispered, “What medical clause?”
Eleanor’s face turned very still.
Audrey covered her mouth, but the words had already escaped.
Lily looked at the leather folder.
“There’s another document,” she said.

Meredith’s eyes found hers.
And this time, Lily saw hatred there.
