The Cousin in Black

Chapter 07 - The Cousin in Black

Isabella Rinaldi had the rare gift of making cruelty look like concern.

She stood in the smoky corridor with one hand at her throat and rain shining on her dark hair, every inch the devastated cousin who had rushed into danger for family. Vivian had watched that performance at funerals, baptisms, and one Christmas dinner where Isabella smiled through a toast while arranging the destruction of another woman’s reputation between courses.

Lorenzo saw only half of it.

That had been their problem from the beginning.

“Why are you here?” he asked.

Isabella blinked as if wounded.

“Rocco called me. He said there was trouble.”

“Rocco did not call me.”

“He knew you’d be with her.”

The word her landed with soft poison.

Vivian stood.

“My name is Vivian.”

Isabella looked at her.

“Yes. For now.”

Gabriel moved slightly, almost imperceptibly, positioning himself between Isabella and Lorenzo. Vivian noticed. Lorenzo did too.

Agent Vale sealed the ledger in a temporary evidence folder. Her eyes moved from face to face, interested in the old family theater but not yet impressed by it.

Isabella pointed toward the device in Gabriel’s hand.

“That was found in her room?”

“Her dressing room,” Gabriel said.

“Where she keeps private things.”

Vivian laughed softly.

Everyone looked at her.

She should have been terrified. Perhaps she was. But after a certain number of traps, fear becomes boring.

“If I planned to burn evidence,” she said, “I would not leave the trigger in a room with my monogrammed slippers.”

Isabella’s face tightened.

“And yet you do enjoy hiding things, don’t you?”

Vivian’s pulse skipped.

Lorenzo noticed.

“What does that mean?” he asked.

Isabella looked almost apologetic.

“I was trying to protect you, Renzo.”

Vivian hated the nickname in her mouth.

“Protect him from what?”

Isabella reached into her coat and removed a folder.

Gabriel moved forward.

Lorenzo lifted one hand, stopping him.

Isabella handed the folder to Lorenzo.

Inside were photographs.

Vivian at St. Agnes.

Vivian with Adrian.

Vivian passing him an envelope.

More photographs followed. Vivian leaving a bank. Vivian entering a women’s shelter. Vivian meeting Agent Vale’s assistant outside a courthouse.

Last came a medical report.

Vivian’s stomach turned to ice.

Lorenzo read the heading.

“St. Agnes Reproductive Health.”

His eyes lifted to Vivian.

The hallway seemed to shrink.

Isabella’s voice softened.

“I didn’t want you to learn this from strangers.”

Vivian stepped toward Lorenzo.

“Give that to me.”

He did not.

That hurt worse than Isabella’s smile.

“What is it?” Lorenzo asked.

Vivian closed her eyes.

For seven years she had carried Lucia’s letter. For eleven months she had carried Lorenzo’s loneliness. For six weeks she had carried something else in her body and told no one because timing, in their world, could turn joy into leverage.

When she opened her eyes, she looked only at Lorenzo.

“I was going to tell you when I knew you could hear it without Rocco turning it into a weapon.”

His face changed.

Isabella inhaled sharply, pleased.

“Oh, darling. That sounds almost noble.”

Lorenzo looked down at the report again.

Vivian saw the line he found.

Eight weeks.

The world became terribly quiet.

Lorenzo’s voice, when it came, was almost unrecognizable.

“You’re pregnant.”

Vivian’s hand moved to her stomach before she could stop it.

“Yes.”

Agent Vale looked away with the first hint of human decency she had shown all morning.

Isabella stepped closer.

“And meeting Adrian Marchetti while carrying a Falcone child. You understand how that looks.”

Vivian turned on her.

“It looks exactly how you arranged it to look.”

“Did I arrange the clinic?”

“No. You arranged the theft of my medical record.”

Isabella’s expression flickered.

Lorenzo saw it.

Finally.

The change in him was small but complete.

He closed the folder.

Then he handed it to Vivian.

Not Agent Vale.

Not Gabriel.

Vivian.

“I am sorry,” he said.

The words landed in the hallway like something too fragile for this house.

Vivian stared at him.

Isabella laughed once.

“Sorry? She lies to you for months and you apologize?”

Lorenzo turned.

“You stole my wife’s medical records.”

“She hid your child.”

“She protected our child from this family.”

Isabella’s face changed.

Our.

Vivian heard it too.

Lorenzo took one step toward his cousin.

“Who gave you the report?”

“I won’t be interrogated by you in your own burning house.”

“You will answer me wherever I ask.”

For the first time, Isabella looked toward the exit.

Too late.

Gabriel blocked the hall.

Agent Vale spoke without moving.

“Mrs. Rinaldi, theft of medical information, evidence tampering, arson conspiracy—this morning is getting expensive for you.”

Isabella’s smile disappeared.

Then her gaze slid past Lorenzo to Vivian’s hand over her stomach.

“You think that makes you safe?” she asked softly.

Lorenzo moved before Vivian could answer.

Not violently. He simply stepped between them.

“No,” he said. “It makes her more dangerous to anyone who believes she will be frightened into silence.”

Vivian wanted not to feel anything.

She failed.

A phone rang in Isabella’s coat pocket.

Gabriel took it before she could move.

The screen showed a blocked number.

Lorenzo answered.

He said nothing.

Rocco’s voice came through the speaker, smooth as old wine.

“Is she crying yet?”

Lorenzo’s eyes lifted to Isabella.

Then to Vivian.

“No,” he said.

A pause.

Rocco exhaled.

“Then tell Vivian her father is waiting for her in the wine cellar. He has been very eager to confess.”
