Sixteen Weeks

Chapter 01 - Sixteen Weeks
Claire Bennett was nearly sixteen weeks pregnant when she saw her ex-husband in the maternity wing.
For one second, she thought she had imagined him.
Adrian Moretti stood at the far end of the private Manhattan hospital corridor in a black overcoat, one hand in his pocket, the other resting at his side.
Marco Bellini stood several steps behind him holding a medical file.
A doctor was speaking quietly.
ââŠVanessa Russoâs bloodwork is stable. Weâll repeat imaging tomorrow.â
Vanessa.
Claire stopped.
The name still knew how to hurt her.
Adrianâs first love.
The woman whose name he had once whispered in bed beside Claire at two in the morning.
He had been asleep.
Claire never asked why.
That had been their marriage in one scene.
A question rising.
A silence chosen instead.
She turned toward the fire door.
Too late.
âClaire?â
Marco had seen her.
His eyes widened.
Then dropped.
Not to her face.
To the curve beneath her camel coat.
Adrian followed his gaze.
His expression did not change immediately.
That was what frightened most people about Adrian Moretti.
He could receive bad news without moving.
Good news too.
He had built an empire out of stillness.
Hotels.
Shipping.
Private equity.
Nightclubs that paid too much for security and too little attention to where that security came from.
Claire had once believed his silence meant strength.
By the end of their marriage, she understood silence could also be a locked door.
âClaire.â
This time Adrian said her name.
She kept one hand on her coat.
âYouâre sick?â
His eyes moved toward the empty chair beside her.
âYou came alone?â
She almost laughed.
Two months divorced and he still made questions sound like accusations against the universe.
âIâm not sick.â
His gaze returned to her face.
âIâm here for a prenatal appointment.â
Nothing.
Then his eyes dropped slowly.
Claire placed one hand over her stomach.
âIâm pregnant.â
For the first time in three years, Adrian Moretti lost control of his face.
Not much.
A breath.
A blink too slow.
His mouth opening before he knew what he meant to say.
Claire stepped past him.
âClaire. Stop.â
She kept walking.
His footsteps followed.
âHow far along?â
âThatâs none of your business.â
âHow far?â
She turned.
âAlmost sixteen weeks.â
He went pale.
She watched him calculate.
Their divorce had been final sixty-three days.
The last night they slept together had been eleven weeks before that.
One night after an argument neither of them resolved.
Adrianâs voice changed.
Not anger.
Hope.
Terrified hope.
âThis baby is mine.â
Claire looked at him.
It was not a question.
That irritated her.
âYou donât get to say it like ownership.â
His jaw tightened.
âIs the baby mine?â
She stared.
Then:
âYou were the one who let me go.â
The ultrasound-room door opened.
A technician smiled uncertainly.
âMs. Bennett?â
Claire turned.
For a second she remembered the first time she had entered a medical room with Adrian.
Three years earlier.
A routine fertility conversation they had both treated like scheduling.
The doctor had asked whether they planned children.
Adrian answered:
âNot now.â
Claire had heard later.
He had heard never.
Neither corrected the other.
That, too, had been their marriage.
Claire looked back at him once.
Then entered the room.
Behind her, Adrian said:
âI didnât know.â
âThat was the point.â
She stepped inside.
The door closed.
The room dimmed.
Cold gel touched her stomach.
Then the monitor filled with gray shapes.
Head.
Spine.
A tiny arm.
Claireâs breath broke.
She had seen the baby before.
Still, every time looked impossible.
Then the heartbeat.
Fast.
Strong.
Alive.
Claire started crying quietly.
Not because Adrian was outside.
Because this was the only room in her life where she had stopped pretending she knew what came next.
The technician handed her tissue.
âEverything looks appropriate for gestational age.â
Claire nodded.
Then:
âCan you tell sex yet?â
âPossibly, but todayâs scan isnât designed for that.â
Claire smiled.
âGood.â
She did not need another answer yet.
Outside, Adrian remained in the hallway.
He heard the heartbeat through the door.
He looked toward Marco.
Marco held Vanessa Russoâs medical file against his chest.
Neither man spoke.
Then Marco said:
âYou should sit.â
Adrian looked at him.
âIâm fine.â
âYouâre not.â
Adrian ignored him.
The ultrasound door opened twelve minutes later.
Claire stepped out holding two printed images.
Adrian stared at them.
She saw.
Then folded them once.
Not hiding.
Protecting.
âClaire.â
âNo.â
âI havenât said anything.â
âI know what youâre going to say.â
âYou donât.â
She looked at him.
âYouâre going to ask for a paternity test.â
Adrianâs silence answered.
Claire felt the old marriage return in one breath.
Evidence.
Control.
Certainty.
âNot today.â
His expression hardened.
âI have a right to know.â
âYou have a right to ask.â
âAnd?â
âI have a right to decide when I am ready to turn this pregnancy into evidence.â
That landed.
Marco looked away.
Adrian said:
âI would never hurt the baby.â
Claire laughed softly.
âNo. You hurt adults.â
Silence.
She regretted it.
Then did not.
Adrianâs face closed.
The elevator opened behind her.
She stepped inside.
He followed.
Claire turned immediately.
âDonât.â
Adrian stopped at the threshold.
The doors remained open between them.
A strange metaphor neither needed.
He said:
âI didnât end our marriage because I stopped loving you.â
Claire stared.
Three months earlier she would have given anything for that sentence.
Now it made her tired.
âYou still ended it.â
The elevator doors began closing.
Adrian reached one hand toward them.
Then stopped himself.
Good.
The doors shut.
Claire leaned against the wall and exhaled.
Only then did she realize Marco still stood outside the ultrasound room holding Vanessaâs file.
And beneath Vanessa Russoâs name, visible for one second before the doors closed, was a second line.
AUTHORIZED CONTACT:
CLAIRE BENNETT.
Claire stared at the metal doors.
She had never authorized anything for Vanessa Russo.
May you like
Which meant someone had put her name in that file for a reason.
And whatever had brought Adrianâs first love to a private maternity hospital had already reached into Claireâs life before Adrian ever saw her pregnant.
