The Baby in the Photograph

Chapter 02 - The Baby in the Photograph
Vanessa moved first.
Not toward Luca.
Toward Daniel.
“Where did you get that?”
Luca’s head turned slowly.
It was the first mistake Vanessa made after the video.
She should have asked who the baby was.
She should have asked whether Anna was safe.
Instead, she asked about the photograph.
Daniel noticed too.
He had worked for Luca for fourteen years, long enough to understand silence as well as orders.
He handed the picture to Luca.
The edges were still sharp from a drugstore printer.
Anna sat in what looked like a motel room.
Plain curtains.
A plastic lamp.
Hospital bracelet still around her wrist.
The baby wore a yellow knit cap.
Luca stared.
“Where?”
Daniel’s voice was low.
“Rockford.”
Vanessa went pale.
I remained near the desk, wishing I could disappear into the wood paneling.
Luca looked at her.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“Then why did you ask where the photo came from?”
Vanessa’s composure returned one piece at a time.
“Because this is insane.”
She pointed at me.
“A maid appears with a story, a USB drive magically turns up inside our cake, and now Anna suddenly reappears with a baby? You don’t find that convenient?”
I almost laughed.
Fear can make rich people discover class consciousness quickly.
Luca did not.
“Leave.”
Vanessa stared.
“This is my engagement party.”
“Not anymore.”
The words were quiet.
Final.
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re going to humiliate me in front of everyone because of her?”
“No.”
Luca looked at the USB.
“Because of you.”
For the first time, I saw hatred pass through Vanessa’s eyes when she looked at me.
Not anger.
Hatred.
I stepped back.
Luca saw that too.
“Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa does not leave the property.”
Her mouth opened.
“What?”
“Not until I know where Michael and Anna have been for six months.”
“You can’t imprison me.”
“No.”
Luca’s voice did not rise.
“I can ask you to stay while I call the police.”
That surprised everyone.
Maybe even Luca.
Men like him did not usually invite law enforcement into family matters.
Vanessa stared.
“You wouldn’t.”
“I’m tired of people saying that to me.”
She looked toward the hall.
There were guests downstairs.
Judges.
Developers.
Two aldermen.
A retired police superintendent.
Half the room had spent twenty years pretending not to know what the Moretti family did for money.
Vanessa understood public scandal better than danger.
She stayed.
Luca sent everyone home.
The cake remained untouched.
The band played one final song to no audience.
I should have left too.
My hand hurt.
My shift was over.
But Mrs. Carter, the head housekeeper, caught my arm in the service hallway.
“You’re not going anywhere alone tonight.”
I looked at her.
“We have the same last name.”
“Every Carter on the payroll becomes my cousin after midnight.”
I almost smiled.
Then she lowered her voice.
“What did you see?”
“Too much.”
“Then stay near people.”
That advice would save me later.
At 11:18, Luca came into the staff dining room.
He had removed his jacket.
Without it, he looked less formal and more dangerous.
The tattoos at his throat were visible above the open collar.
Everyone stopped eating.
He looked at me.
“Lily.”
My stomach tightened.
Mrs. Carter stood beside me.
Luca noticed.
Good.
He did not ask her to leave.
“What?”
“Daniel is driving to Rockford.”
I nodded.
“I want you here when he brings Anna back.”
“Why?”
“Because she trusted you before she trusted me.”
“She never met me.”
“The woman from the bakery did.”
He was right.
I had not thought about that.
“Who was she?”
Luca asked.
I described her.
Late fifties.
Gray-blonde hair.
Navy wool coat.
Small scar near her left jaw.
Hands that shook when Vanessa entered.
Luca stopped.
“Teresa Bellini.”
Vanessa’s aunt.
Her father’s older sister.
A woman missing from Bellini family photographs for years.
Luca looked toward Daniel.
“Find her too.”
Daniel left.
At midnight, I finally went upstairs to the small staff room Mrs. Carter assigned me for the night.
I did not sleep.
My burned hand pulsed.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Vanessa pressing it against metal.
Not because she lost control.
Because she made a decision.
At 2:07, someone tried my doorknob.
Once.
Then again.
I sat up.
Mrs. Carter’s warning returned.
Stay near people.
I grabbed my phone.
Before I could call anyone, a note slid beneath the door.
YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE MONEY.
My heart stopped.
No one had offered me money.
Not yet.
I opened the door only after Daniel’s second-in-command arrived.
The hall was empty.
Security cameras showed nothing.
Someone had disabled the camera outside the staff wing for exactly ninety seconds.
At 2:20, Luca stood in the doorway reading the note.
“Who offered you money?”
“No one.”
He looked at me.
“Think.”
“I am thinking.”
“The afternoon. The bakery woman. Vanessa.”
I shook my head.
Then remembered.
Vanessa had said something while I held my burned hand under cold water.
I’ll make this worth your silence.
At the time, I thought she meant keeping my job.
Maybe she had meant cash.
I told Luca.
His jaw tightened.
He looked at my bandage.
“Why didn’t you tell me she hurt you immediately?”
I almost laughed.
“Because you were marrying her.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is if you clean rich people’s houses for a living.”
He stopped.
I continued.
“You have people around you who disappear.”
His face changed.
“You think I make employees disappear?”
“I think nobody knows where your brother is.”
That hit.
I regretted it.
Not because it was untrue.
Because grief moved through his face too quickly to pretend I hadn’t seen.
Luca stepped back.
“Fair.”
He turned to leave.
I called after him.
“Mr. Moretti.”
He looked back.
“Why does Vanessa need a baby?”
His expression hardened.
“I don’t know.”
“Then ask what she gets if she gives you an heir.”
He stared.
I had grown up with no inheritance beyond debt.
Rich families seemed to hide knives inside paperwork.
At 3:11, Daniel called.
He had reached the motel.
Anna was gone.
The room had been cleaned.
The baby blanket remained on the bed.
Under it, Daniel found a hospital discharge sheet.
Mother: Anna Moretti.
Infant: Male.
Father: Michael Moretti.
Luca closed his eyes.
His brother had a son.
Alive somewhere.
Then Daniel read the final line.
Emergency contact: Vanessa Bellini.
Luca looked toward the wing where his former fiancée was being watched.
For the first time that night, even he seemed afraid.
May you like
Because Vanessa was not trying to steal a baby from strangers.
She was trying to take the Moretti heir.
