Vanessa Was Protecting the Deal and Luca at the Same Time

Chapter 04 - Vanessa Was Protecting the Deal and Luca at the Same Time

Vanessa moved out of the mansion before anyone asked her to.

That surprised me.

Maria said she packed four suitcases herself.

No staff.

No dramatic ring left on pillow.

She took the engagement ring to Luca’s study and handed it to him.

I did not see it.

Good.

Some scenes are not evidence.

Later she asked to give a formal statement to the committee.

Her lawyer present.

No Luca.

No Dominic Bellini.

She admitted three things.

First:

She knew about the participation ledger six weeks before the dinner.

Second:

She told Peter Sloan to retrieve it discreetly.

Third:

She planned to tell Luca only after the transaction’s financing commitments became non-cancelable.

Why?

Money.

Her closing award.

Her father’s deal.

And Luca.

She believed Luca would blow up the transaction if he saw Rosa’s file.

She was right.

“That does not make hiding it right,” counsel said.

“I know.”

Then a fourth thing.

She had seen Luca’s 2021 Caruso email.

That was why she wanted to resolve the claims before showing him.

Not to protect him from guilt.

To protect the deal from his reaction.

She knew he had used supplier leverage before.

She knew he might do it again.

She wanted settlement first.

Then disclosure.

Tomorrow.

Again.

Then Vanessa said something nobody expected.

“I also thought if I solved it, he would not have to see what he had become.”

That was love in one of its worst costumes.

Protection from self-knowledge.

Then her father Dominic.

He had instructed Bellini counsel to price the unresolved rights into the deal.

Not conceal them.

That surprised everyone.

Dominic wanted a lower purchase valuation if Moretti had liabilities.

Vanessa did not.

She wanted the marriage transaction to look cleaner.

So in one part, she had hidden information from her own father too.

No single villain.

Then Peter.

He had gone further than Vanessa knew.

He copied my personnel file.

Why?

Because he saw my grandmother’s surname in the ledger and wanted to know whether I might assert rights.

I had none.

Still privacy violation.

Vanessa learned this only after the dinner.

Her face in the committee interview went hard.

“I did not authorize that.”

The access logs supported her.

Peter used transaction due-diligence credentials too broadly.

His firm faced a privacy complaint.

Then Anthony Caruso’s 2021 settlement.

Independent review concluded economic pressure made enforceability uncertain.

The estate reopened mediation.

No automatic voiding.

Anthony had counsel.

Signed.

Received money.

But supplier leverage created litigation risk.

New settlement:

Additional $640,000 to Rosa’s estate.

Independent calculation.

Past unpaid participation.

Interest.

Compromise on buyout value.

No Luca check across a table.

Estate split according to Rosa’s will.

Maria and Anthony each received their shares.

Maria kept working.

Important.

Money did not require retirement.

Then Etta Ward’s estate.

Different facts.

Her daughter had never received any settlement.

Participation accounting produced a larger number.

$1.1 million.

Estate accepted after independent counsel.

Lucille Greco’s family?

Found a 2015 settlement.

Valid.

No extra claim.

Again:

Not everyone gets paid because one ledger exists.

Then Moretti Hospitality restated certain historical liabilities.

Bellini demanded price reduction.

Deal value dropped.

Vanessa’s closing award disappeared because closing did not happen on original terms.

Consequences attached naturally.

No need to strip her inheritance.

Then Luca.

Board investigation went beyond supplier retaliation.

They found another system:

EXECUTIVE RELATIONSHIP FLAGS.

A database where legal disputes with one Moretti entity could be visible to procurement across others.

Created during Luca’s tenure.

Purpose:

Fraud prevention.

Conflict detection.

Also used for leverage.

He had approved it.

Not every flag caused retaliation.

But the tool made cross-business pressure easy.

Board disabled it pending redesign.

Luca stepped down from direct procurement oversight.

Then a state attorney general inquiry began.

Unfair business practices.

Potential retaliation against small vendors.

Not mafia murders.

Emails.

Contracts.

Power.

Luca’s lawyers argued business groups can consider relationship risk.

True.

Regulators argued unrelated legal claims should not punish separate contracts absent legitimate reason.

Also true.

Civil resolution likely.

Then I left the mansion.

Not because Luca asked.

Not because Vanessa was gone.

Because every employee started bringing me things.

A payroll discrepancy.

A supervisor complaint.

A rumor.

As if being bruised had promoted me into truth department.

I was still a maid.

No authority.

No training.

Unsafe for everyone.

I gave notice.

Luca read it in the library.

“Is there anything I can change?”

“No.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

No counteroffer.

Good.

“What will you do?”

“I don’t know.”

Then:

“Can I give you a reference?”

I thought.

“For housekeeping work.”

“Yes.”

“Nothing about the ledger.”

He almost smiled.

“Understood.”

I applied to a hospitality payroll company as a records assistant.

They liked that I knew kitchens, service charges, schedules, and the difference between what managers think happens and what staff actually do.

Maria gave the strongest reference.

Not Luca.

I got the job.

Day shift.

Less glamorous.

Better boundaries.

Then on my final evening, Maria gave me a photocopy.

One page from the ledger.

June Hayes’s signature.

My grandmother.

Underneath, Lucia had written:

June says work should leave a person with enough dignity to go home without carrying the employer in her body.

I looked at Maria.

“What does that mean?”

“She hated back pain.”

I laughed.

Of course.

Not metaphor.

Then Maria added:

“Also probably the other thing.”

We laughed again.

I folded the copy.

Took it with me.

No original files.

No secret evidence.

I walked out through the staff entrance.

No Luca waiting.

No romance scene.

Good.

The next morning, the attorney general announced a formal investigation into Moretti vendor retaliation practices.

And for the first time, I could read Luca’s name in the news without wondering whether it would change my paycheck.
