The Fiancée Who Came Back Bleeding

Chapter 08 - The Fiancée Who Came Back Bleeding
Vanessa arrived at the mansion with blood on her sleeve.
Not much.
Enough.
Daniel opened the side gate and brought her through the service entrance.
Olivia saw her first.
The red gown from the engagement dinner was gone.
Vanessa wore black trousers, a cashmere coat and one diamond stud.
The other was missing.
Her right palm was cut.
Her face looked younger without makeup.
“Where’s Luca?”
“Study.”
Vanessa stopped.
“No.”
Olivia stared.
“You came here.”
“I came to you.”
“Why?”
“Because he will decide too quickly.”
Olivia almost laughed.
“That is rich.”
“I know.”
Vanessa looked toward the hall.
“Please.”
The word sounded like it hurt.
Olivia took her into the laundry room.
Not safe.
Not private enough.
But hidden from the front corridor.
“What happened?”
“My father tried to take my phone.”
“Why?”
“Mercer sent me a copy of Adrian’s files before he was attacked.”
“You have them.”
“No.”
Vanessa pulled a flash card from inside the lining of her coat.
Tiny.
“I have this.”
Olivia stared.
“What’s on it?”
“Bank transfers.”
“To Adrian?”
“From Adrian.”
“Where?”
“Shell companies. Nevada. Delaware. Cayman.”
“How much?”
“Forty-three million over eleven years.”
Olivia’s pulse jumped.
“From Luca?”
“From Moretti companies.”
“Did Luca know?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Not this.”
The distinction mattered.
“What were you part of?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“My father told me Adrian was diverting money to hide it from the government.”
“You believed him.”
“At first.”
“Why?”
“Because Luca’s family does hide money from the government.”
Fair.
Vanessa continued.
“My father said marriage would stabilize both families.”
“Meaning?”
“I would hold proxy if Luca became incapacitated.”
“So Carlo and Adrian could control the vote through you.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know that before the engagement?”
“Yes.”
Olivia stared.
Vanessa did not look away.
“Then you were part of it.”
“Yes.”
Clean.
Ugly.
Good.
“Why stop?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“I wish I had a noble answer.”
Olivia waited.
“My father changed the prenup draft.”
“How?”
“If Luca became incapacitated, I would not just hold proxy.”
“What?”
“I would gain authority to appoint an interim executive committee.”
“Carlo and Adrian.”
“Yes.”
“And if Luca objected?”
“He wouldn’t be legally capable.”
Olivia felt cold.
“You asked Adrian what would happen if Luca became incapacitated.”
“Yes.”
“Were they planning to hurt him?”
“I didn’t know.”
“That is not an answer.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I did not ask.”
Olivia stared.
There.
Complicity by silence.
Same as Luca.
Same as Adrian.
Same family disease without blood.
“When did you ask?”
“Yesterday.”
“After my face.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa looked at the blood on her palm.
“Because when you looked at me at dinner, I realized I had become the kind of woman who needed a maid to lie so I could keep wearing a ring.”
The sentence was self-aware enough to be painful.
Olivia softened slightly.
Not forgiveness.
Room.
“Why the photos of Claire?”
“My father said Claire had evidence Adrian was stealing.”
“True.”
“He wanted the evidence.”
“And the affair lie?”
“To make Claire angry enough to retrieve it.”
Olivia nodded.
“What did you think would happen after?”
“Mercer would follow her.”
“And steal it.”
Vanessa looked away.
“Yes.”
“Did Mercer know?”
“No.”
“He thought locating the box was enough.”
“Did you tell him to deliver the false affair story?”
“Yes.”
Olivia exhaled.
“Why five years?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because that would place the affair inside Luca’s marriage.”
“Yes.”
“I know.”
“Do not say sorry yet.”
Vanessa nodded.
Olivia held out her hand.
“The card.”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Luca will destroy my father.”
“Your father sent two cars after you.”
“That does not mean I want him dead.”
Olivia stared.
“Then maybe Luca needs to stop solving things that way.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You think he can?”
“I don’t know.”
Honest.
Vanessa handed over the card.
At that moment, Luca appeared in the doorway.
Neither woman had heard him.
His eyes moved from Vanessa’s cut hand to Olivia’s face to the flash card.
Vanessa went pale.
“Luca.”
He did not answer.
Olivia stood between them without meaning to.
Not physically shielding Vanessa.
Creating space.
Luca noticed.
“What happened?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“My father knows I copied Adrian’s files.”
“Did he hurt you?”
“No.”
“The hand.”
“Car door.”
He looked at Olivia.
She nodded.
Probably true.
Luca’s eyes returned to Vanessa.
“You hired Mercer to manipulate Claire.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to steal the envelope.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the proxy clause.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Carlo and Adrian wanted control.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know they intended to harm me?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“No.”
“Did you ask?”
Silence.
Luca understood.
His face became frighteningly calm.
Olivia stepped closer.
“Luca.”
His eyes moved to her.
“Not like this.”
“What does that mean?”
“You’re angry.”
“Yes.”
“Do not decide while you’re angry.”
His jaw tightened.
Vanessa looked between them.
Luca asked:
“Why are you protecting her?”
Olivia shook her head.
“I’m protecting the decision.”
That stopped him.
He looked away.
Breathed.
Then:
“Daniel.”
The security chief appeared.
“Vanessa stays in the east guest suite.”
Vanessa flinched.
“Am I a prisoner?”
Luca looked at her.
“No.”
“Can I leave?”
“Yes.”
“Will my father’s men be outside?”
“Yes.”
“Yours?”
“Yes.”
“That sounds like a prison with better sheets.”
“Maybe.”
Olivia looked at him.
He corrected.
“You decide whether to stay.”
Vanessa stared.
Then nodded.
“I’ll stay.”
Good.
Luca looked at the flash card.
“We copy this. Daniel sends it to outside counsel and federal financial crimes.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Federal?”
“Yes.”
“My father—”
“Made his choices.”
“So did I.”
Luca looked at her.
“Yes.”
No mercy.
No cruelty.
Accuracy.
They reviewed the files in the study.
Transfers from Moretti Logistics.
Real-estate subsidiaries.
Charity accounts.
Forty-three million dollars diverted through consulting invoices.
Adrian’s digital signature.
Carlo’s approvals.
Then one set of payments to Graham Voss.
Olivia felt her stomach tighten.
The supposedly dead security guard had been paid every quarter for seventeen years.
Carlo and Adrian had kept him alive.
Kept him useful.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Look at the last payment.”
Three days ago.
Amount:
$100,000.
Memo:
O.H. RESOLUTION.
Olivia’s initials.
The room went silent.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Luca stared at the screen.
Then Daniel found the attached instruction.
One sentence.
MAKE IT LOOK LIKE SHE LEFT WITH THE MONEY.
Olivia felt cold.
“What money?”
Daniel opened another file.
A wire scheduled for midnight.
$500,000.
Destination:
An account in Olivia Hayes’s name.
She stared.
“I don’t have that account.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“It was opened yesterday.”
Vanessa looked sick.
“They’re framing her.”
Luca’s face became stone.
Not for theft alone.
For disappearance.
The plan was becoming clear.
Transfer money into Olivia’s name.
Make her vanish.
Tell everyone the maid blackmailed the family and ran.
May you like
The bruise at dinner had merely accelerated a plan already waiting.
And Olivia realized Vanessa was never the only woman in that house being used as a convenient story.
