The Glove at the Engagement Table

Chapter 01 - The Glove at the Engagement Table
Claire Dawson almost made it to the table.
Six more steps.
That was all she needed.
The silver tray held six porcelain bowls of soup, and her left handâswollen beneath a thin black glove that did not belong with the uniformâwould not close properly around the edge.
So she carried the weight with her right palm and pressed the tray against her hip.
Awkward.
Unprofessional.
Possible.
Finish the shift.
Collect the hours.
Go home.
Forget what happened at 4:20.
Especially that last part.
Claire was twenty-eight and had worked in Luca Morettiâs Chicago mansion for nine months. The job paid better than the hotel she had left, which was the only reason she tolerated rooms where one chandelier probably cost more than every car she had ever owned.
Twenty-three guests sat beneath those chandeliers now, celebrating Luca Morettiâs engagement.
At the head of the table sat Luca.
Thirty-nine.
Dark suit.
Open-collar white shirt.
Dark wavy hair swept back.
A man so quiet that other people seemed louder around him.
Beside him sat Vanessa Bellini in red silk and diamonds.
Beautiful.
Composed.
Smiling as if she had not cornered Claire upstairs three hours earlier.
Claire kept walking.
One step.
Two.
The soup shifted.
Her injured fingers failed when she tried to steady the tray.
One bowl slid half an inch.
Porcelain clicked.
Luca reached out and caught the tray before anything fell.
âClaire.â
Her stomach tightened.
âYes, Mr. Moretti?â
His eyes went to the glove.
âWhy are you wearing one glove?â
Claire looked down.
The thing suddenly felt enormous.
âI cut my hand.â
Vanessaâs fork stopped.
Luca noticed.
âWhen?â
âThis afternoon.â
Claire reached for the nearest soup bowl.
He did not let her.
âHow?â
And before she could answerâ
Vanessa said:
âShe caught it in the linen closet.â
Claireâs hand froze.
For two seconds, nobody spoke.
Luca turned toward his fiancĂŠe.
âThe linen closet?â
Vanessa smiled.
âThe upstairs door closed on her hand.â
Luca looked back at Claire.
âDid it?â
Vanessaâs gaze pressed against the side of her face.
âYes.â
âWhat were you doing?â
âPutting away sheets.â
Vanessa added:
âShe had towels too.â
That was her second mistake.
Luca looked at her.
âYou saw this happen?â
âNo.â
âThen how do you know what she was carrying?â
A tiny pause.
âShe told me.â
His eyes returned to Claire.
âDid you?â
Claire hesitated.
âYes.â
Too late.
He had already seen the delay.
Luca pointed toward the glove.
âTake it off.â
Her heartbeat climbed into her throat.
âItâs fine.â
âClaire.â
She pulled at the cuff.
The glove came away slowly.
Her palm was swollen.
Two fingers were wrapped together.
But Luca did not look at the swelling first.
He looked at the four narrow bruises around her wrist.
Finger marks.
Vanessa reached for her water.
Lucaâs expression changed.
âThat didnât come from a door.â
âOh, Luca,â Vanessa said.
He ignored her.
âWhat happened?â
âI told you.â
âNo.â
His voice stayed calm.
âYou told me what somebody expected you to say.â
Claireâs eyes lifted.
Straight toward Vanessa.
She regretted it immediately.
Because Luca followed the glance.
Vanessaâs polished smile thinned.
âClaire,â he said, âare you afraid of losing your job?â
Her eyes burned.
âYes.â
âYou wonât.â
Vanessa leaned back.
âSheâs making this much more dramatic than it was.â
Luca turned.
âYou were there.â
Not a question.
Vanessaâs expression tightened.
âI never said that.â
âNo.â
He watched her.
âYou didnât have to.â
Then he stood.
âClaire, put the tray down.â
âI can finish.â
âYouâre done for tonight.â
âI need the shift.â
âYouâre being paid.â
âI donât need charity.â
Something shifted in his face.
âIt isnât charity.â
His eyes went to Vanessa.
âItâs time.â
Claire did not understand.
Vanessa did.
Her smile vanished.
Luca called the head housekeeper.
âMrs. Carter, take Claire upstairs. Call Dr. Harris.â
Vanessa pushed back from the table.
âShe doesnât need a doctor.â
Luca looked at her.
âHow do you know?â
Silence.
Then Claire left.
For the next forty minutes, Luca did something Vanessa clearly had not expected.
Nothing.
No accusation.
No confrontation.
He finished dinner.
Discussed flowers.
Listened to a guest complain about zoning.
Even smiled when Vanessa mentioned Lake Como.
By dessert, she was smiling again.
At 10:14, Vanessa went upstairs.
Luca waited exactly three minutes.
Then entered his study and called Nico Ferraro, his head of security.
âPull the upstairs hallway cameras from four until five.â
Five minutes later, the footage appeared.
4:16 p.m.
Claire walked upstairs carrying folded sheets.
Both hands moved normally.
No glove.
No bandage.
She entered the linen room.
Thirty seconds later, Vanessa appeared.
She checked the hallway.
Then went inside.
Four minutes passed.
Vanessa came out alone.
She closed the door.
Then locked it.
Luca stopped moving.
âPause.â
The image froze with Vanessaâs hand still on the key.
âWhat time does Claire come out?â
Nico skipped forward.
4:31.
The door opened from inside.
Claire stepped into the hallway.
Her left hand was pressed against her chest.
Her face was pale.
And something small was clenched between the fingers of her right hand.
âZoom.â
The image sharpened.
A silver memory card.
Lucaâs voice lowered.
âWhat is that?â
âWe donât know.â
âFind out.â
Five minutes later, Nico called.
âWe checked Claireâs locker.â
Luca stood.
âYou found it?â
âYes.â
âWhatâs on it?â
A pause.
âTwenty-seven photographs.â
âOf what?â
âMostly nothing.â
Lucaâs jaw tightened.
âMostly?â
âThe last four were taken in your private study.â
He went still.
âMy study?â
âYes.â
âWhen?â
âYesterday.â
Vanessaâs bedroom was directly above him.
âWhat do they show?â
âThe first shows Vanessa opening the bottom drawer of your desk.â
Luca said nothing.
âThe second shows her removing a sealed document.â
âAnd the third?â
A longer pause.
âVanessa handing it to someone.â
Lucaâs voice became very quiet.
âWho?â
âWe canât see his face until the fourth.â
âThen show me the fourth.â
The image opened.
A tall man in a tuxedo turned toward the hidden camera.
Luca gripped the desk.
He knew him.
Gabriel Santoro.
His oldest friend.
His chief financial officer.
The man who had agreed to stand beside him at the wedding.
His best man.
Nico continued.
âThereâs something written on the back of the document.â
âWhat?â
He zoomed.
Lucaâs wedding date.
And beneath it, in thick black ink:
DO IT BEFORE HE SAYS I DO.
The study door opened.
Claire stood there with an ice pack against her hand.
Luca looked at her.
âWhat did you hear upstairs?â
Her face lost color.
âI heard Mr. Santoro tell Vanessa that after the wedding, the papers would be useless.â
âWhat papers?â
âI donât know.â
âWhy did she lock you in?â
Claire swallowed.
âBecause I found the memory card.â
âHow?â
âIt fell out of the stack of sheets she told me not to touch.â
Luca looked at the photographs.
âDid Vanessa know what was on it?â
âYes.â
âHow?â
Claireâs voice became smaller.
âBecause she told Mr. Santoro they should have destroyed it weeks ago.â
May you like
Then she looked at Luca with the same fear she had tried to hide at dinner.
âAnd she said if you saw those pictures, youâd know your best man had been lying to you for years.â
