Eleanor Dawson Had Raised a Child Who Wasn’t Hers

Chapter 04 - Eleanor Dawson Had Raised a Child Who Wasn’t Hers

Rachel’s mother was named Nora Dawson.

She died at fifty-two from ovarian cancer.

Rachel had been twenty-four.

Emma never met her.

Nora did not resemble Rachel much.

Dark blond hair.

Gray eyes.

A narrow face.

She had always joked that Rachel inherited everything useful from Rachel’s father.

The laugh.

The stubbornness.

The inability to throw away plastic containers.

Now Rachel sat in Mara Bell’s office staring at a sealed trust created by Eleanor Dawson.

Beneficiary unknown.

Anna Bell Educational Trust.

Created one year after Anna Caruso supposedly died.

“That does not mean my mother,” Rachel said.

Mara nodded.

“Correct.”

Vincent sat across the room.

Not beside her.

Important.

“Can the file be unsealed?” Rachel asked.

“Possibly. You may have standing if Eleanor was your grandmother and trustee.”

“Do it.”

Mara smiled slightly.

“Your lawyer should.”

Rachel frowned.

“I don’t have—”

Vincent started:

“I can—”

Rachel turned.

“No.”

He stopped.

Good.

Mara gave Rachel three names.

Independent trust-and-estates attorneys.

Rachel chose Ellen Price.

Contingency for any recovered assets plus capped hourly consultation.

Written.

No Caruso payment.

Then they petitioned.

The court file was partly unsealed because the original beneficiary was deceased.

Name:

NORA ELEANOR BELL.

Rachel stared.

Her mother.

Birth date matched.

Place of birth:

Albany, New York.

Mother:

ANNA BELL.

Father:

NOT LISTED.

Adoptive guardian:

ELEANOR DAWSON.

The room went silent.

Rachel looked at Vincent.

He had gone pale.

“No.”

The word came from him.

Rachel could not feel her hands.

“My mother’s mother was Anna.”

Mara corrected gently.

“The filing says so. We still verify.”

Right.

Records.

Not emotion.

Birth certificate.

Hospital archive.

Eleanor’s guardianship petition.

All existed.

Anna Bell gave birth under an assumed name seven months after she disappeared from the Caruso house.

She signed temporary guardianship to Eleanor.

Then disappeared again.

Three months later, Eleanor converted it into permanent guardianship.

Reason:

MOTHER UNAVAILABLE / SAFETY CONCERNS.

No death certificate.

Rachel’s stomach turned.

“Where did Anna go?”

Nobody knew.

Then Ellen Price found a sealed affidavit attached to the guardianship.

Eleanor’s handwriting.

I believe Anna Bell is in danger from members of her family and has left New York voluntarily.

If she does not return, Nora must never be placed with Salvatore Caruso.

Vincent stood.

Walked to the window.

Rachel watched him.

“Did you know she was pregnant?”

“No.”

Immediate.

“Did you know she was alive?”

“No.”

“Did your father?”

Vincent did not answer.

Which meant maybe.

Then Emma, who had been coloring in the outer office with Kate from reception, came in carrying a purple marker.

“Mom?”

Rachel looked at her daughter.

Her great-great? Let's calculate: Anna is Rachel's maternal grandmother. Vincent is Anna's brother, so he is Rachel's great-uncle. Emma is Vincent's great-grandniece. Fine.

Rachel knelt.

“Come here.”

Emma climbed into her arms.

Vincent stared.

Not as a boss.

As a man doing arithmetic with bloodlines.

Emma looked at him.

“Why are you sad?”

His throat moved.

“You really do remind me of someone.”

This time Rachel understood.

Not destiny.

Family.

Maybe.

Ellen Price ordered DNA testing before anyone turned resemblance into fact.

Vincent agreed.

Rachel agreed.

Independent lab.

Results:

Probability of avuncular relationship consistent with Vincent being Rachel’s great-uncle.

The genetic relationship was real.

Rachel laughed when she read it.

Not because it was funny.

Because three weeks earlier she had been polishing a silver tray in a house belonging to a great-uncle she had never known.

Emma looked at the paper.

“Is Mr. Vincent family?”

Rachel sighed.

“Technically.”

Emma smiled.

“I knew it.”

“No, you did not.”

“I kind of did.”

Children revise history quickly.

Then the trust assets.

Current value:

$4.8 million.

Rachel nearly dropped the report.

But the money was complicated.

Original funding came from Anna’s personal inheritance share.

Then decades of contributions from unknown sources.

Some from Eleanor.

Some from an old Caruso account.

Recent contributions from staff-loan repayments.

Money polluted by coercive fees.

Rachel’s lawyer advised:

Do not touch anything until tracing is complete.

Good.

Rachel did not want a surprise fortune built from Maria’s envelopes.

Then Mara found an old Caruso archive box.

Marked:

A. BELL / CLOSED.

Inside:

Letters.

Not from Anna.

To Anna.

Vincent’s father.

Salvatore.

Three letters returned unopened.

Then one from Vincent.

Age twenty-eight.

The year after Anna disappeared.

Anna—

Father says you are dead.

I do not believe him.

If you are alive, tell me what I failed to see.

Rachel’s chest tightened.

The letter had been opened.

Not returned.

A small pencil mark at the bottom.

Two words.

NOT YET.

Anna’s handwriting, according to an old birthday card.

Vincent stared.

“She got it.”

He had written to her.

She read it.

She chose not to come back.

Then Rachel found another envelope.

Addressed not to Anna.

To Vincent.

From Eleanor Dawson.

Never opened.

Stamp date:

1993.

Three years after Nora’s guardianship.

Why unopened?

The envelope had been stored in Salvatore’s private files.

Not delivered.

Vincent’s face changed before Rachel opened it.

Eleanor wrote:

Mr. Caruso,

Anna is alive.

She has asked me not to reveal where.

She has a daughter.

You have a niece.

If you ever separate yourself from your father’s businesses, I will tell you how to contact her.

Until then, I will not place either of them in your house.

Rachel looked up.

Vincent stood absolutely still.

His father had intercepted the letter.

For thirty-three years, Vincent believed Anna vanished because she hated him.

In reality, Eleanor had offered him a condition.

Leave the family business.

Then you can know your sister.

Vincent never received the choice.

And yet Rachel could not give him the comfort he wanted.

Because even without the letter, he had stayed.

Built power.

Signed his father’s relief fund into debt.

Inherited the house.

Became exactly the man Eleanor feared.

Then Emma asked the question nobody else wanted to.

“Where is Anna now?”

Silence.

Ellen Price turned another page.

A death certificate had finally been filed.

Not under Anna Bell.

Under:

ANNE BELL DAWSON.

Vermont.

2008.

Rachel stared.

Anna had lived nineteen more years after disappearing.

Long enough for Rachel to be seventeen.

May you like

Long enough to know she existed.

And apparently she had chosen never to come back.
