PART 8

Chapter 8
"You handled yourself with extraordinary poise today, Cory," Miller told her. "Your mother would be immensely proud of the way you protected your sister and held your ground."
"Thank you, Captain Miller," Cory said softly. "Thank you for keeping Mom’s promise and for showing us that we were never really traveling alone."
"Whenever you fly, these wings will always remember who you are," Miller replied. "Now go on. Your Aunt Nola has been pacing the terminal for the last forty minutes."
Cory and Zena walked out of the jet bridge into the bright, bustling concourse of the airport. The noise of travelers, luggage carts, and gate announcements filled the vast open hall.
Standing just beyond the security exit was their Aunt Nola, her arms wide open and tears streaming down her smiling face. She wore a bright floral dress that stood out in the crowd.
"My precious babies!" Nola cried out, wrapping both girls in a massive, warm embrace that smelled of sweet lavender and home. "You made it! Look at you both, so tall and brave!"
"Aunt Nola, we have so much to tell you," Zena said, burying her face into her aunt’s shoulder. "Mom left us letters, and her wings, and the captain knew who she was!"
Nola pulled back, her eyes landing on the gold wings pinned to Zena’s cardigan and the chronometer on Cory’s wrist. Her smile grew soft with profound, reverent understanding.
"I know, my sweet girl," Nola said, kissing both of their foreheads. "Your mother told me she had arranged the safest flight in the world for you. She never broke a promise."
Cory turned back for a brief moment, looking through the large terminal windows at Ship 702 resting quietly at the gate, its polished fuselage gleaming under the Southern sun.
She knew now that respect, dignity, and belonging were not things that could ever be bought with gold-edged slips or stolen through arrogant demands in an airline aisle.
They were built through love, forged through sacrifice, and passed down like an unbreakable compass pointing steadily toward truth, no matter how high the journey might climb.

Taking her sister's hand tightly in her own, Cory walked forward beside Aunt Nola, ready to embrace the wide, open future that her mother had so bravely mapped out for them both.
