Raymond Cole Said Koslov Did Not Pull the Trigger

Chapter 05 - Raymond Cole Said Koslov Did Not Pull the Trigger
The room went silent.
Lily heard her own breathing.
âThen who did?â
Raymond looked at James.
Not Lily.
James went pale.
Marcus saw it too.
âRaymond.â
His voice stayed quiet.
âLook at me.â
Raymond did.
âWhat happened at Kestrel?â
Raymond took a long breath.
âAnthony told me to keep Morgan alive and recover the drive.â
Lily stared.
âRecover.â
âYes.â
âMeaning take it.â
âYes.â
âDid my father agree?â
âNo.â
No polite word for theft.
Raymond continued.
Anthony left Kestrel after arguing with Thomas.
Then called Raymond.
Said Thomas was going to police.
Said Koslov would kill him before morning if he believed it.
Anthony wanted a security team there first.
Not to kill Thomas.
To remove him.
Bring him somewhere safe.
And take the drive.
âWhy take it?â Lily asked.
Raymond looked ashamed.
âBecause Anthony wanted one night to clean his own books.â
Even rescue came with self-interest.
âWho did you send?â
Raymondâs eyes went back to James.
Lily turned.
Jamesâs face had become stone.
Raymond said:
âEthan Harrison.â
Jamesâs older brother.
Dead nine years.
Motorcycle accident.
Lily looked at James.
âYou knew.â
James did not answer.
His attorney touched his arm.
Then nodded.
He could.
James said:
âYes.â
The word barely carried.
Raymond continued.
Ethan Harrison had been thirty-two.
Blackwell security.
Good under pressure until he was not.
A second man went with him.
Junior driver named Luis Ortega.
Their instruction:
Get Thomas out.
Secure the drive.
Do not hurt him.
At 10:28, before Ethan arrived, Koslovâs SUV entered the lot.
Raymond had not expected that.
âHow did Koslov know?â Marcus asked.
Raymond closed his eyes.
âMe.â
âWhy?â
âMy son owed them money.â
Lily stared.
Raymondâs son had been twenty-two.
Drugs.
Debt.
Koslovâs people found him before Anthony called.
They told Raymond they would kill the boy unless Raymond told them where the Morgan data was.
So Raymond gave them Kestrel.
Then panicked.
Sent Ethan anyway.
Two retrieval teams.
One frightened man in the middle.
At 10:34, Koslovâs men entered the office.
Thomas refused to hand over the drive.
At 10:38, Ethan came through the rear emergency entrance using a Blackwell master badge.
No badge record survived in the archive.
Because James deleted it later.
Lily turned slowly.
James looked down.
Raymond continued.
There was an argument.
Then a fight.
One of Koslovâs men pulled a gun.
Ethan pulled his.
Thomas moved between them.
A shot.
Then two more.
âWho fired?â Lily asked.
Raymond stared at the camera.
âThe first was Koslovâs man.â
âAnd the others?â
Silence.
âRaymond.â
âOne was Ethan.â
The room disappeared.
âWhich killed him?â
âWe never knew.â
No clean murderer.
No satisfying answer.
Thomas had three gunshot wounds.
Ballistics from the old case identified two calibers.
One associated with a weapon later tied to Koslov crews.
One never recovered.
Ethanâs.
The medical report could not conclusively assign the fatal wound because Thomas lost blood from more than one injury.
Lily sat perfectly still.
For twelve years:
Koslov killed my father.
Now:
Koslov sent men.
Raymond betrayed Thomas.
Anthony tried to take the evidence.
Ethan Harrison fired.
Maybe the fatal shot.
Maybe not.
Everyone contributed.
Nobody owned the whole sentence.
Lily looked at James.
âYou deleted your brotherâs badge.â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
Jamesâs voice cracked.
âRaymond told me to.â
âThat is not why.â
No.
He looked at her.
âI was twenty-six.â
âSo?â
âHe told me if Ethan appeared in the logs, Anthony would turn him over.â
âWould he?â
âYes.â
âAnd you protected your brother.â
âYes.â
âDid you edit camera four too?â
âNo.â
âWho?â
âRaymond removed the tape.â
âDid you change the incident report?â
James closed his eyes.
âYes.â
That was the betrayal Marcus felt.
Not because James had been young.
Because James had spent twelve years beside him.
Six as his closest security chief.
Never told him.
Marcus spoke for the first time in minutes.
âWhat did you change?â
James looked at him.
âThe internal conclusion.â
Originally:
BLACKWELL AND KOSLOV PERSONNEL PRESENT. RESPONSIBILITY UNCLEAR.
James changed it to:
PROBABLE KOSLOV RETALIATION. NO BLACKWELL INVOLVEMENT ESTABLISHED.
Marcus went still.
That was the summary he later read.
The summary that made declining an internal review easier.
Lily saw the realization land.
James had not forced Marcus to decline.
But he had handed him the comfortable version.
Marcus had chosen it.
Both.
âWhy didnât you tell me after Ethan died?â Marcus asked.
Jamesâs face twisted.
âBecause by then you trusted me.â
âThat made it worse.â
âYes.â
âWhy stay?â
James looked at Lily.
Then Marcus.
âTo keep the system from becoming Raymond again.â
Lily laughed bitterly.
âBy keeping Raymondâs lie.â
âYes.â
James did not pretend the logic worked.
Raymond continued.
After Thomas died, Anthony discovered the coverup.
Not immediately.
Three months later.
He confronted Raymond.
Then James.
Anthony wanted to expose both.
Raymond threatened him with copies of Blackwellâs own Mirror crimes.
Mutual destruction.
Anthony backed down.
Power again.
Not justice.
He fired Raymond from family security but kept him buried in facilities until retirement.
He demoted James for a year.
Then later, after Anthonyâs health declined, James climbed again.
Marcus inherited him.
Never knew why the personnel file showed a strange gap.
Never asked.
Another missing question.
Then Lily asked:
âWhy did Anthony pay the storage fee two days after Dad died?â
Raymond frowned.
âI didnât know he did.â
James did.
Again.
Lily looked at him.
âTell me.â
James swallowed.
âAnthony found the key in Thomasâs coat after police released personal effects to the company liaison.â
âWhat?â
âWhy would police give Blackwell his things?â Lily asked.
âNot all of them. A security badge and work key were returned through Kestrel management. The locker key was on the same ring.â
Anthony opened the storage locker.
Read Thomasâs letter.
Saw the drive.
And left it.
âWhy?â
Jamesâs eyes filled.
âHe said if he took it, then Thomas had died for nothing.â
Lilyâs anger rose.
âThat sounds noble.â
âIt wasnât.â
James shook his head.
âHe also said keeping it outside Blackwell gave him leverage if Raymond or Koslov came after the family.â
Truth preserved as insurance.
Not justice.
Anthony paid the storage fees anonymously for years.
Then stopped after setting up an automatic reserve.
That was why the locker survived.
Lily looked at Marcus.
âYour father knew.â
âYes.â
âHe knew Blackwell people might have shot mine.â
âYes.â
âAnd did nothing public.â
âYes.â
Marcus did not defend the dead.
Then Raymondâs attorney interrupted.
âThere is one matter Mr. Cole needs to clarify.â
Raymond looked suddenly older.
âThe Janus failsafe.â
Lily leaned forward.
âWhat about it?â
âAnthony found out.â
âWhen?â
âThree months after Thomas died.â
âHow?â
Raymond looked at James.
Not again.
James whispered:
âI told him.â
Lily stared.
âWhy?â
âBecause I thought he was going to kill Raymond.â
âSo you gave him something else.â
âYes.â
Anthony discovered Janus was still embedded in a Blackwell mirror server.
He did not remove it.
He moved it.
Into Lantern.
Meaning the failsafe Lilyâs father designed had been living inside the Blackwell empire for twelve years by Anthonyâs choice.
And if Janus had survived thereâ
May you like
it might contain the one thing nobody had found yet.
A machine record of who altered Thomas Morganâs files after he died.
