Chapter 1

Chapter 1

I spent three years hiding my son from the most powerful Mafia boss in Chicago. Then, in the middle of a crowded airport, my little boy pointed at a stranger and said five words that nearly destroyed everything.
“Mommy, that man looks like me.”
My blood turned to ice.
Because the man standing twenty feet away was Dante Moretti.
My former lover.
My older sister’s husband.
And the father of the almost-three-year-old boy trembling in my arms.
Dante had faced enemies without flinching. I had seen him remain terrifyingly calm when his entire empire was under threat.
But when his gray eyes landed on Leo’s face, the color drained from his cheeks.
He looked at my son.
Then at me.
And I watched the exact moment he began putting together the secret I had carried across an ocean.
Three years earlier, Dante had shattered my heart in a way I never imagined possible.
After loving me for eight years, he married my older sister.
And now, standing in Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, I realized the past I had fought so desperately to escape had finally caught up with me.
***
I was only supposed to be in Chicago for five days.
Five days to arrange the relocation of my father's remains, settle the necessary paperwork, and fly back to Zurich before anyone from my former life discovered I had returned.
It seemed simple enough.
My best friend, Mia, had traveled with me to help care for Leo. She knew everything—about Dante, about Victoria, and about the little boy whose existence could turn the Moretti family upside down.
As our plane descended toward Chicago, Mia glanced across the aisle at Leo, who was happily playing with a stuffed dinosaur.
Then she sighed.
“Elena, you do realize you're bringing Dante Moretti's miniature clone into his own city, right?”
I gave her a warning look.
“He looks like me.”
Mia raised an eyebrow.
“His smile looks like you. Everything else? Come on.”
I looked at my son.
Leo had inherited my smile, my stubborn personality, and my habit of wrinkling my nose when I was annoyed.
But his thick black hair, striking gray eyes, and serious little frown?
Those belonged entirely to his father.
Sometimes, when Leo sat quietly studying something, I could barely breathe.
Because for one terrible second, I would see Dante looking back at me.
“Dante doesn't know we're coming,” I whispered. “And he won't find out. We have five days. That's all.”
Mia didn't look convinced.
“Men like Dante don't exactly overlook things happening in their city.”
“Then we'll make sure there's nothing for him to notice.”
I wanted to believe those words.
God, how desperately I wanted to believe them.
***
Before Dante Moretti broke my heart, he was my entire world.
To everyone else, he was Chicago's most feared Mafia boss—a powerful, ruthless man whose name could silence an entire room.
But I knew a different Dante.
I knew how he liked his coffee in the morning.
I knew which old scars ached whenever winter settled over Chicago.
I knew the particular silence that surrounded him when something had gone wrong inside the Moretti organization.
And I knew that no matter how brutal his world became, he always came home to me.
For eight years, I believed that meant something.
For eight years, I believed we were building a future together.
There was only one thing Dante refused to give me.
Marriage.
“I can't marry you, Elena.”
Those five words became the most painful sentence of my life.
Every time I asked why, his expression closed.
“Please, Dante. Just tell me what I'm waiting for.”
He would hold me, kiss my forehead, and ask me to trust him.
And because I loved him, I did.
I waited.
Year after year, I waited for the day he would finally choose me.
Then one afternoon, an ivory wedding invitation arrived.
The lettering was elegant.
The paper was expensive.
And the two names printed across the front nearly stopped my heart.
DANTE MORETTI
AND
VICTORIA CARTER
Victoria.
My older sister.
For several minutes, I couldn't move.
I read the invitation again and again, searching for some explanation that might make it less horrifying.
There wasn't one.
The man who had refused to marry me for eight years was marrying my sister.
I went to the wedding.
Even now, I couldn't explain why.
Perhaps some foolish part of me believed that if I saw Dante standing at the altar, he would look at me and realize what he was doing.
But he didn't.
He stood in front of everyone and placed a wedding ring on Victoria's finger.
The same kind of promise I had spent eight years begging him to make to me.
I sat there, perfectly still, while the future I had imagined was handed to someone else.
And when Dante kissed his bride, something inside me finally died.
Three weeks later, I packed my belongings and left America.
I didn't call him.
I didn't ask for another explanation.
I simply disappeared.
It wasn't until I reached Switzerland that I learned I was pregnant.
Dante's baby.
I remember sitting alone, staring at the test while tears slid down my cheeks.
For eight years, I had dreamed of having a family with that man.
Now I was carrying his child while he was married to my sister.
I chose to raise Leo alone.
Dante never knew.
And I promised myself he never would.
***
For almost three years, that promise held.
Then my father's remains needed to be relocated, and I had no choice but to return to Chicago.
Everything went according to plan until we reached the airport arrivals area.
The waiting SUV was already outside.
Mia walked ahead with the luggage while I carried Leo against my hip, scanning the crowd for familiar faces.
“Almost there, sweetheart,” I whispered.
Leo wrapped his little arms around my neck.
Then, suddenly, his body went still.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, baby?”
He pointed over my shoulder.
“That man looks like me.”
I turned.
And my entire world stopped.
Dante Moretti stood near the far side of the terminal.
Black overcoat.
Broad shoulders.
The same commanding presence that once made my heart race.
He was looking in another direction.
He hadn't noticed us.
Not yet.
I immediately turned away.
“Mia,” I whispered sharply. “We need to go. Now.”
She followed my gaze.
Her face went pale.
“Oh, God.”
I tightened my grip around Leo.
“Don't look back.”
We moved faster.
The exit was only a few yards away.
A few more steps, and we would be outside.
Then I heard my name.
“Elena?”
My stomach dropped.
I kept walking.
“Elena!”
This time, his voice cut through the entire terminal.
Against every instinct screaming at me to run, I glanced backward.
Dante was staring directly at us.
First at my face.
Then at the little boy in my arms.
I watched his expression change.
Confusion.
Recognition.
Disbelief.
His gaze locked onto Leo's gray eyes.
Those unmistakable Moretti eyes.
And then his attention snapped back to me.
He looked as though someone had knocked the ground out from beneath him.
“Elena, wait!”
I ran.
Leo cried out in surprise as I hurried through the exit.
Behind me, Dante's footsteps grew louder.
“Elena! Stop!”
I reached the SUV, climbed inside with Leo, and slammed the door.
“Drive!” I shouted.
The driver hesitated.
“Ma'am—”
“NOW!”
The vehicle pulled away just as Dante reached the curb.
Through the rear window, I saw him standing there, his chest rising sharply, his eyes following us.
I had never seen Dante Moretti look helpless.
Until that moment.
***
My phone began ringing before we reached the first intersection.
Dante.
I rejected the call.
He called again.
And again.
Then the messages appeared.
“Elena, we need to talk.”
I didn't answer.
A second message arrived.
“How old is he?”
My hands began trembling.
Then came the question I had spent nearly three years dreading.
“Is Leo my son?”
I stared at the screen while Leo rested his little head against my shoulder.
Mia sat beside me, watching silently.
Finally, I typed four words.
“You married my sister.”
His reply came almost immediately.
“You don't know why I married Victoria.”
A bitter laugh escaped my throat.
Eight years.
Eight years of loving him, trusting him, and waiting for an explanation.
And now he wanted me to listen?
“You had eight years to tell me,” I wrote.
“Elena, please. Just give me a chance to explain.”
“No.”
“That's my son.”
My entire body stiffened.
I typed carefully.
“Leo is not a bargaining chip, Dante. You don't get to use him to force me into a conversation.”
Then I blocked his number.
For several seconds, the car was silent.
I thought it was over.
Then my phone vibrated again.
An unfamiliar number.
One message.
I opened it.
And the words on the screen made my heart pound so violently I could barely breathe.
“You can hate me for marrying Victoria. You can hate me for refusing you. But before you take my son away again, give me ten minutes to tell you why I did both.”
I read it once.
Twice.
Then a third time.
Across from me, Mia leaned forward.
“Elena? What did he say?”
I couldn't answer.
Because suddenly, the question I had buried three years ago was staring me in the face.
WHY had Dante refused to marry me for eight years?
WHY had he chosen Victoria instead?
And why, after everything, did he sound as though his marriage had been something other than a choice?
My thumb hovered over the screen.
I had once begged Dante Moretti for an explanation.
Now the most powerful man in Chicago was begging me for ten minutes.
Ten minutes that might explain eight years of heartbreak.
Ten minutes that could destroy everything I believed about my sister.
But as I held our sleeping son against my chest, one terrifying thought kept repeating in my mind.
PART 2: I stared at Dante’s message for what felt like an eternity before finally telling the driver to take us to a quiet hotel. My hands were shaking, and Mia kept glancing at me as if she expected me to fall apart. I wanted to delete the message and pretend he had never found us. But when I looked down at Leo’s sleeping face, I knew I couldn’t keep running forever.
