What Serena Lost

Chapter 05 - What Serena Lost
I picked up the medical record.
There are certain things the body understands before the mind has courage.
My hand already knew.
My eyes found Serena’s name, then the date, then the words emergency surgery, internal bleeding, no spouse notified.
The paper did not say grief.
Paper never says enough.
Serena saw it in my hand and made a sound so small the old me might have mistaken it for guilt.
Now I recognized it as shame placed where sorrow should have been.
“Give it to me,” she whispered.
Enzo snapped, “Serena, do not perform.”
She did not look at him.
I held the page gently, as if touching it too firmly would hurt her twice.
“What happened?”
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came.
Patricia answered, and each word seemed to cost her.
“Two months after the wedding, she was pregnant.”
The room disappeared again, but not like before.
This time the disappearance had edges.
A crib I had never assembled. A heartbeat I had never heard. A version of Serena alone under hospital lights while I slept in the same city believing she despised me.
Serena wrapped both arms around herself.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know how. We weren’t… you had already stopped coming home early.”
Because I had thought she could not stand the sight of me.
Because she had made me think it.
Because I had chosen to believe what spared my pride.
“What happened?” I asked again, softer.
She looked at the windows.
“I went to see my father. I was going to tell him I was done. I was going to tell him if he threatened you again, I would tell you everything.”
Enzo looked bored, which was when I knew the story was true. False accusations make guilty men angry. Accurate ones make them tidy.
“Bruno drove me home,” Serena said. “Not my driver. Bruno. I remember arguing with him. I remember him saying my father needed me calm. Then I woke up in a private clinic under a name I didn’t recognize.”
Patricia covered her mouth.
Serena’s face folded for one second, then she pulled herself together with an elegance that made me want to break every room that had taught it to her.
“The pregnancy was gone.”
Nobody spoke.
Even Enzo did not smile now.
“Why was I not told?” I asked.
Patricia answered, “Because Enzo told the clinic you were a risk to her. He told them your marriage was violent. He paid for discretion. He made her sign releases while she was sedated.”
I looked at Enzo.
The old instincts rose.
Not noise. Not fury.
A silence my father would have recognized.
Serena stepped between us.
“Don’t,” she said.
She was not protecting him.
She was protecting what remained of me.
That was when the third truth of the day arrived.
Serena had not only pushed me away to save my life.
She had spent three years saving the part of me everyone else expected to die.
The phone in my hand buzzed again.
Nico.
FOUND BRUNO FERRARO. HE IS DOWNSTAIRS WITH BUILDING SECURITY. SAYS HE WILL SPEAK ONLY TO SERENA.
I showed the message to my wife.
The blood drained from her face.

Enzo turned toward the elevator.
And for the first time all afternoon, he looked afraid.
