The Wedding She Refused to Cancel

Chapter 02 - The Wedding She Refused to Cancel
Daniel did not open the curtain.
He reached beneath the rack beside it and found the cuff-link box Frank had deliberately moved there.
Emily learned that later.
At the time, all she heard was Daniel say:
“Got them.”
His footsteps receded.
The front bell rang.
Door closed.
Silence.
Emily stayed still for ten seconds.
Then twenty.
Frank exhaled.
“Oh, God.”
Emily pulled the curtain aside.
“Play it.”
“Colonel—”
“Play it.”
He did.
Daniel’s voice filled the shop.
Once Colonel Mercer walks down that aisle, the transfer is sealed.
Her clearance opens doors.
By Monday, those files disappear.
Every word sounded worse the second time because denial had less room.
Frank stopped the recording.
Emily said:
“How long?”
“What?”
“How long have you suspected him?”
His face changed.
That was answer enough.
“Frank.”
“Three weeks.”
Her stomach tightened.
“You knew three weeks ago?”
“I suspected.”
“You said nothing.”
“I had nothing.”
“You had suspicion.”
“You were getting married.”
“That is not an excuse.”
“I know.”
He looked ashamed.
“I know.”
Frank explained that Daniel had come into the shop weeks earlier and left his phone on the counter. A message preview appeared from Evan Price:
Tell me we’re not really doing this.
Daniel’s reply:
Too late.
Frank did not search the phone.
He started watching.
Daniel returned twice and asked odd questions about Emily’s new assignment, access badges, and whether spouses could pick up altered items for officers.
That afternoon, Daniel called about missing cuff links.
Frank knew Emily would be fitting her jacket.
He put his phone on record before Daniel arrived.
“You set this up.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“I needed certainty.”
Emily looked at him.
Everyone apparently believed withholding information from her was a form of protection.
She was already tired of it.
“What do we do now?” Frank asked.
“You give me the recording.”
He did.
Emily copied it to a secure personal evidence folder, then called Colonel Leah Saunders, an Army Criminal Investigation liaison she had trusted for years.
“Leah.”
“Emily? Aren’t you supposed to be getting married?”
“Maybe.”
Silence.
“Tell me.”
Emily did.
Leah’s voice changed immediately.
“Do not confront him.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Do not go home alone.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Do not access any restricted systems.”
“I know.”
“Do not tell your command yet.”
Emily paused.
“Why?”
“Because if this touches your Monday assignment, we don’t know who else is involved.”
That was the first real expansion of the danger.
Emily had been thinking Daniel.
Evan.
Maybe corporate theft.
Leah was thinking network.
Inside the military.
They met in Frank’s back office.
Leah listened to the recording twice.
“What transfer?” she asked.
“My assignment.”
“Could mean something else.”
“Such as?”
“Money. Data. Ownership. Personnel.”
Emily nodded.
“Files disappear?”
“That concerns me more.”
“What files would Daniel know I can access?”
“Exactly.”
Leah looked at Frank.
“Who else knows about the recording?”
“No one.”
Emily said:
“Wedding tomorrow.”
“Cancel.”
“No.”
Both Leah and Frank stared.
“If we cancel, Daniel knows I heard.”
“So?”
“So he destroys evidence.”
Leah leaned back.
“You want to proceed.”
“With the ceremony.”
“Absolutely not legally.”
“Fine.”
Emily’s mind moved quickly.
Public ceremony.
Guests.
Military colleagues.
A fixed timeline.
Predictable movements.
“If we keep the event in place, he continues the plan.”
Leah rubbed her forehead.
“You are proposing a controlled operation at your own wedding.”
“I am proposing we let him reveal what he intends to do.”
“You are personally compromised.”
“I know.”
“Emotionally involved.”
“I know.”
“You cannot run the investigation.”
“I know.”
“Then stop talking like you can.”
Emily almost smiled.
Fair.
She took a breath.
“What do you need from me?”
“Obedience.”
Frank laughed once.
“Good luck.”
Leah continued.
“You attend no secure facility alone. You do not discuss your transfer. You do not access Monday credentials. You do not provoke Daniel.”
“Can the wedding continue?”
“Ceremony only if command security approves and we control it.”
Emily nodded.
“What about Evan?”
Best man.
Lieutenant.
Complicit.
Nervous.
“I want to know what commission Daniel meant.”
Leah nodded.
“We find out.”
At that exact moment, Emily’s phone rang.
Daniel.
She answered.
“Hi.”
His voice was warm.
Familiar.
“Got the cuff links.”
“I’m glad.”
“Frank said you stepped out.”
Emily looked at Frank.
He had told Daniel she was in the restroom.
Good.
“Everything fit?”
“Yes.”
“Can’t wait to see you tomorrow.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Me too.”
Daniel laughed softly.
“Love you, Colonel.”
She opened her eyes.
“Love you too.”
The lie came easily.
That was when Emily understood something terrifying.
If Daniel could perform love for months, she could perform it for one more day.
Then he said:
“By the way, your transfer packet arrived at the house.”
Leah froze.
Emily’s blood turned cold.
“What packet?”
Daniel answered casually.
May you like
“The one marked personal delivery only.”
And suddenly the conspiracy was already inside her home.
