CHAPTER 5: THE REAL FATHER

The name on the paternity file was Nolan Price.

Carter’s chief financial officer.

His best man.

Carter sank back into his chair as if the room had removed his spine.

“No,” he said.

Amber looked away.

Beatrice opened her eyes, and for the first time that night, I saw fear land somewhere real.

Not for Amber.

Not for Carter.

For the company.

Nolan had access to everything Carter hid: bonuses, shell accounts, escrow, corporate cards, and the private money Carter had been moving out of our marriage.

“Where is Mr. Price now?”

Carter’s attorney said, “This is outside the vehicle matter.”

Nathan gave him a look I almost admired.

“Your client’s alleged heir is apparently the child of the man who handles his hidden money. Scope has expanded.”

By midnight, Nolan’s name appeared in every file I had brought: hotel charges, prenatal payments, and Amber’s downtown apartment lease.

Amber finally spoke clearly.

“Nolan told me Carter would leave Evelyn faster if he thought the baby was his,” she said. “Beatrice knew it might be Nolan’s. She said blood could be managed later.”

Carter looked at Beatrice.

“What does that mean?”

Beatrice’s voice was ice. “It means you were hesitating.”

“You let me plan my divorce around another man’s child.”

“I helped you leave a barren marriage.”

I thought the word would hurt.

It did not.

It revealed her.

Carter laughed once, broken. “You did this for me?”

“I did it for the family name.”

“Which family?” I asked. “The one you were about to attach to Nolan’s baby?”

Beatrice turned on me.

“Do not speak.”

I smiled.

“You lost that privilege when you used my car as a prop.”

Nolan was picked up the next morning at the airport with a carry-on, two passports, and seventy-eight thousand dollars in cashier’s checks. He claimed business travel. Ruiz asked why business required Amber’s ultrasound photo in his wallet.

He asked for a lawyer.

That afternoon, the story changed again.

Nolan had not merely fathered Amber’s child. He had helped Carter drain company funds before divorce discovery. The fake paternity gave Carter leverage. The staged crash made me look unstable. Later, Nolan planned to expose the paternity and control Amber through money.

Everyone had been using everyone.

Beautiful.

Messy.

Documentable.

At the preliminary family hearing three days later, Carter arrived gray and badly shaved. Beatrice wore black as if grieving the unborn grandchild she never truly knew. Amber came with her attorney and avoided Carter’s eyes.

Judge Abernathy reviewed the petition, dashcam files, police report, and paternity result.

Then she looked at Carter.

“Mr. Vance, you asked this court to restrict your wife’s financial authority based on facts that appear to have been staged after filing.”

Carter swallowed.

“I was misled.”

The judge’s eyebrows lifted.

“By your mistress, your mother, your CFO, or your own emails?”

No one spoke.

Nathan presented my audit and Carter’s email to Beatrice: If we can get Evelyn tied to reckless driving or assault, she loses leverage. Criminal women do not win settlements.

The judge read it silently, then removed her glasses.

“Immediate sole financial control of marital accounts is granted to Mrs. Vance pending forensic review. Protective orders are granted. I am referring all materials to the district attorney.”

Beatrice stood.

“This is outrageous.”

The judge looked at her.

“Sit down before I decide it is contempt.”

Beatrice sat.

Afterward, Amber approached me in the hallway.

“I never meant for it to go this far.”

I looked at her belly, then her face.

“You meant for it to go as far as it benefited you.”

She flinched.

Then Ruiz called my phone.

“We found something in Nolan’s office.”

“What?”

“A folder with your name on it.”

Inside were photos of my car, my office schedule, and a note in Carter’s handwriting: If Evelyn does not react, force second incident.

They had a backup plan.
