CHAPTER 3: THE FILE THAT CAME BACK FROM THE CLOUD

Patricia’s request reached the nurses before Ryan returned from the hallway.
A charge nurse named Denise stepped into Emily’s room with professional caution. “Mrs. Brooks, your mother-in-law says there may be concerns about your emotional state and access to the babies.”
Emily stared at her.
Patricia had a polished voice. Emily had stitches, exhaustion, and a body that had nearly become a crime scene. Manipulation had arrived dressed as concern.
“Detective Sullivan is handling the incident,” Emily said.
Denise glanced toward the NICU window. “Until we understand family authorization, we need to be careful.”
Ryan came back then, his phone in one hand, wedding ring in the other.
“Family authorization?” he repeated.
Denise straightened. “Your mother claims she has temporary medical decision paperwork.”
Ryan’s face went still.
“She has nothing.”
“She says your sister brought forms for Emily to sign before complications began.”
Emily shut her eyes.
They had planned for the hospital too.
Ryan opened the fake folder Detective Sullivan had photographed at the house. One form had a paragraph Emily had missed: if Emily became medically incapacitated before delivery, Patricia Brooks would become temporary family representative for the twins’ trust and medical decisions.
Emily’s blood went cold.
“They wanted me too injured to refuse.”
Ryan set his ring on the table. “No one except me and Emily gets access to our children. None.”
Denise nodded. “I’ll place a security note.”
After she left, Ryan called Olivia Parker.
Olivia answered, “Tell me the device wasn’t wiped.”
“Hub unplugged. Pantry camera should have ten-second cloud fragments.”
“Recovery key?”
Ryan read the tiny engraving inside his wedding ring.
Olivia was quiet for ninety seconds. Then her voice sharpened.
“I have the uploads.”
Detective Sullivan returned with Emily’s phone sealed in an evidence bag, recovered from under the pantry cabinet.
Olivia joined by secure video.
The first clip began with Brianna tossing the folder onto the island.
Sign it.
Then Emily’s voice.
That money is for Sophie and Lucas.
Then Brianna’s threat: Tomorrow, that account will be drained.
The next clips showed the phone knocked away, Emily falling, Brianna forcing her thumb to the screen, the access denied message, and Patricia entering from the hallway.
Is it done?
Almost.
No one spoke in the hospital room.
Then came the worst clip: Patricia kneeling with rubber gloves, wiping the floor while Brianna cried from frustration.
“She won’t remember clearly,” Patricia said. “Ryan will be too worried about the babies to question paperwork.”
Brianna answered, “Ethan said he can override the lock Friday if Emily confirms she approved the transfer.”
Detective Sullivan paused the video.
“Who is Ethan?”
Ryan shook his head once. “I don’t know.”
Olivia typed fast. “I do. The failed access attempt logged device data before emergency lock. Tablet registered to Ethan Carter, assistant branch manager at WestBridge Bank. He is Brianna’s boyfriend.”
Ryan’s hands tightened.
Sullivan stood. “We can arrest them now.”
“No,” Emily said.
“Brianna said Friday. Ethan is inside the bank. If you arrest Brianna, he deletes whatever he prepared.”
“You want a controlled operation.”
“I want everyone who touched my babies’ money.”
Ryan looked as if he wanted to argue, then remembered who Emily had been before his family reduced her to a patient.
Emily reached for her phone and typed Patricia a message.
I don’t remember everything. I’m scared Ryan will blame me. Can you help me fix the account before Friday?
Patricia answered in eleven seconds.
Of course, sweetheart. We will protect the twins from bad decisions.
Emily looked at the screen.
“They think I forgot.”
Olivia’s voice came through the laptop.
“Good. Let’s make that expensive.”
Then another alert appeared on Olivia’s screen.
She leaned closer.
“Emily, the bank hold was just challenged again.”
Ryan stood.
May you like
Olivia looked up, eyes cold.
“From inside WestBridge.”
