Chapter 6

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a ring of silver. In the center sat a flawless sapphire flanked by two brilliant diamonds, catching the moonlight with dazzling brilliance.

“Five years ago, you asked if you had claimed neutral territory,” I murmured, my voice trembling with profound devotion. “Tonight, I want to ask if you will claim my heart, my life, and my name forever.”

Naomi’s eyes filled with joyful tears as she looked down at the ring, pressing both hands against her mouth. “Alessandro,” she whispered, her voice rich with love that had survived every storm, every lie, and every silence.

“Will you marry me, Naomi?” I asked, kneeling on the cool stone terrace just as I had in that cafe. “Will you let me love you and protect our family until my very last breath on this earth?”

“Yes,” she cried softly, dropping to her knees beside me and wrapping her arms tightly around my neck. “A thousand times yes, my love. I have loved you since the day we met above the clouds.”

I slipped the ring onto her finger, feeling its perfect fit seal the promises we had renewed together. I pulled her into a deep, tender kiss that erased every lingering shadow of the past five broken years.

A soft giggle broke our embrace, and we looked toward the French doors leading out onto the moonlit terrace. Lily stood there in her pink bunny pajamas, rubbing her eyes with one hand while holding Bunny tightly in the other.

“Are you kissing Mommy because you love her?” Lily asked, a mischievous smile spreading across her sweet face. Naomi laughed through her happy tears, opening her arms wide to welcome our daughter into our warm embrace.

“I am kissing your mother because she is the greatest gift in my life,” I said, lifting Lily up. “And because she just promised that we are going to be together as a family for the rest of time.”

Lily wrapped her arms around both our necks, pulling our heads close together beneath the vast, starlit New York sky. “That means you will never leave,” she stated simply, resting her forehead against mine with absolute certainty.

“I will never leave, my beautiful Lily,” I promised, kissing her temple while Naomi held my hand tightly. “From this day forward, wherever you and your mother walk, that is where my home will always be.”

We sat together on the terrace until the cool night gave way to the soft pinks and golds of dawn. The city awoke below us with its bustling hum, but above the river, our hearts rested in perfect, unshakable peace.

The man who had once built cold empires of stone had finally found the only kingdom that ever truly mattered. It was built of crayons, worn rabbits, sweet cocoa, and the enduring forgiveness of the woman I adored.

Seat 3B had not been a coincidence of travel, but the grace of a destiny that refused to abandon us. And in the bright morning light, our little girl smiled, knowing her father was finally home to stay forever.
