đŸ”„THEY FOUND IT - JUSTICE DEPT. JUST RAMPED UP PROBE OF NEWSOM

FEDERAL SCRUTINY AROUND GAVIN NEWSOM WIDENS—BUT CLAIM THAT DOJ “FOUND” A CRIME IS UNCONFIRMED

Investigators are examining financial matters connected to Jennifer Siebel Newsom and people in the governor’s political orbit. No charges have been filed against Gavin Newsom or his wife, and the Justice Department has not publicly identified either as a criminal target.

SACRAMENTO — Federal investigators have intensified inquiries involving people and organizations connected to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, raising new questions about his wife’s finances, former staff members and records held by entities around the Democratic governor.

But the viral declaration that investigators “found it” goes beyond anything publicly confirmed.

Newsom announced in June that federal agents had contacted relatives, friends and former employees while requesting records related to business, financial and personal matters. His office characterized the activity as an expanding investigation targeting both him and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

Independent reporting presents a more complicated picture. A source familiar with the inquiries told the Associated Press that investigators were conducting several probes involving people around Newsom, including one related to his wife’s taxes, but denied that a criminal investigation was specifically targeting the governor himself.

“Ramped up” came from Newsom’s office—not DOJ

The phrase suggesting the investigation had recently “ramped up” originated with Newsom’s staff.

His office said it learned that agents were asking more detailed questions and reaching further into the couple’s professional and personal networks. It also said investigators had subpoenaed records from organizations and other entities connected to them.

The Justice Department has not issued a public announcement confirming that the investigation expanded, uncovered incriminating evidence or moved closer to criminal charges. DOJ officials have repeatedly declined to discuss the matter.

Newsom’s office filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking communications among senior Justice Department officials that mention the governor or his wife. The administration described the inquiry as a politically motivated “fishing expedition,” but that remains Newsom’s allegation rather than an established finding about prosecutors’ motives.

One inquiry reportedly concerns Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s taxes

Reuters and the Associated Press reported that federal authorities in Sacramento began examining financial issues involving Siebel Newsom in 2025.

According to sources who spoke anonymously because the matter remains confidential, the inquiry involves her taxes and may relate to the California Partners Project, a nonprofit she co-founded to promote gender equity and child well-being.

State disclosures show that Newsom solicited more than $4 million in donations for the organization beginning in 2020. Some donors also conducted business with California, although such donations—commonly known as behested payments—are not inherently illegal when properly reported.

The existence of a tax inquiry does not establish that Siebel Newsom violated the law. No indictment, criminal complaint or target letter involving her has been made public.

Newsom’s office has said it is unaware of either spouse receiving a target letter or being directly approached for an interview. It believes investigators may have obtained financial records through subpoenas issued to banks or organizations instead.

Former chief of staff’s guilty plea is a separate case

Some reports have blurred the inquiry involving the Newsoms with the prosecution of Dana Williamson, the governor’s former chief of staff.

Williamson pleaded guilty in May to charges arising from a scheme to divert $225,000 from a dormant campaign account associated with former Health Secretary Xavier Becerra. She also admitted making false statements and filing false tax returns that classified approximately $1.7 million in personal spending as business expenses.

That investigation began during the Biden administration, years before Newsom publicly accused the Trump administration of targeting his family. The alleged campaign-fund scheme began before Williamson joined Newsom’s office, and prosecutors have not accused Newsom of participating in it.

Authorities have reportedly expanded the Williamson investigation to include other people in Newsom’s professional circle. That does not mean evidence from Williamson’s case has implicated the governor.

Her former attorney previously said investigators asked whether she could cooperate in a separate investigation involving Newsom, but he said she had no information to provide. No public filing has explained what investigators were seeking.

Hiring a defense attorney signals caution, not guilt

Newsom and his wife have retained prominent Washington attorney Abbe Lowell to represent them as federal scrutiny continues.

Lowell has represented numerous politicians and high-profile clients in congressional and criminal investigations. Hiring experienced counsel is a predictable response when investigators are contacting associates and seeking financial records; it does not demonstrate that prosecutors possess evidence of a crime.

The Newsoms have not disclosed the full legal advice they received, and attorney-client confidentiality means many details may remain private unless charges, subpoenas or court proceedings become public.

Missing tax returns create a transparency problem

Newsom also faces legitimate criticism over his failure to keep a promise to release his personal tax returns annually.

The most recent filings previously made public covered income through 2020. CalMatters reported that Newsom had not released subsequent returns despite pledging greater financial transparency when he first ran for governor.

That gap gives critics grounds to demand more disclosure, especially while investigators are examining financial matters involving organizations associated with his wife.

But failing to publish voluntary tax disclosures is not by itself evidence of tax fraud. Personal tax returns generally remain confidential unless the taxpayer releases them or they become evidence in a legal proceeding.

The unanswered transparency question and the confidential federal inquiry may overlap politically, but the public record does not yet establish that they are legally connected.

Political retaliation or legitimate investigation?

Newsom says the investigation is retaliation for his confrontations with President Donald Trump and his consideration of a 2028 presidential campaign.

He argues that agents are searching for misconduct rather than investigating evidence of an already identified crime. His wife has similarly accused the administration of targeting their family for political reasons.

Sources familiar with the inquiries have offered an important counterpoint: at least some of the investigations reportedly originated with federal prosecutors in California during the previous administration, rather than being initiated by Trump’s political appointees in Washington.

Both facts may prove relevant. An investigation can begin for legitimate reasons and later become more aggressive under new leadership. Conversely, Newsom may be using the secrecy surrounding routine investigative work to frame himself as a victim of political persecution.

Without DOJ documents, court filings or public charges, neither interpretation has been conclusively established.

What has actually been confirmed

Federal authorities are examining financial matters involving Jennifer Siebel Newsom and have contacted people associated with the governor. Records have reportedly been subpoenaed, and the Newsoms have hired private counsel.

Dana Williamson, Newsom’s former chief of staff, pleaded guilty in a separate fraud case that began under the Biden administration. Gavin Newsom has not been accused of involvement in that scheme.

What has not been confirmed is the central claim in the sensational headline: no agency has announced that investigators discovered a crime committed by Newsom or his wife.

The investigation may eventually produce charges, close without action or remain unresolved for months. For now, the most accurate description is that federal scrutiny around California’s governor has intensified—while the evidence, targets and ultimate purpose remain largely hidden from public view.
