The Loop Breaks

Alex stood in the pouring rain.

Warehouse lights flickered.

Elena waited inside.

Phone in his pocket burned like fire.

"I have to know," he whispered.

He stepped through the door.

The voice screamed in his ear.

"Stop! She's the reason the timelines are collapsing!"

Elena turned, lab coat over her trench.

"Alex. You brought the drive. Good."

She activated a machine.

Holograms of possible futures spun.

In one, Alex was dead at 35.

In another, he lived rich but alone.

"The caller isn't you," she said softly.

"It's a digital copy. Trapped. Trying to rewrite its own deletion."

Alex's hand went to the phone.

It was ringing.

He answered on speaker.

The older voice broke.

"She's lying. I am you. I lost Mia because I trusted her."

Elena smiled sadly.

"The scar, Alex. Look."

She showed an old photo.

Future Alex's left hand. Scarred.

Present Alex's hand began to itch.

A cut appeared.

Blood welled.

Sarah burst in behind them.

"I followed you. This is insane!"

The machine hummed louder.

Timelines flickered faster.

Alex realized the truth in a flash.

The caller wasn't trying to save him.

It was trying to become him.

By erasing the present Alex.

Elena reached for the phone.

"We can contain it."

But Alex smashed the quantum drive.

Sparks flew.

The voice cried out.

"No! Don't make my mistake!"

Everything went white.

When vision returned, Elena was gone.

Sarah stared in horror.

The phone screen showed one final text.

"You just created two of us now."

Alex looked at his left hand.

The scar was fully formed.

And in the rain outside,

a figure that looked exactly like him

May you like

watched from the shadows.

Smiling.
