The Last Passenger - Part 1: The Empty Cabin

Alex Rivera jolted awake.

A sharp pain shot through his neck as he lifted his head from the airplane window.

For the first few seconds, everything seemed perfectly normal.

The steady hum of the jet engines vibrated faintly beneath the floor.

The cabin lights cast a dim, golden glow.

The atmosphere was so quiet it almost felt comforting.

Alex rubbed his eyes.

He glanced at his watch.

He couldn't remember how long he'd been asleep.

Maybe a few minutes.

Maybe a few hours.

He turned to the seat beside him.

Empty.

Strange.

Where had the man sitting next to him gone?

Alex frowned.

He looked toward the rows ahead.

Then behind him.

His entire body went rigid.

No one.

Not a single passenger.

Not a single flight attendant.

No conversations.

No coughing.

No crying children.

Not even the familiar rustling sounds of people moving around the cabin.

Only the endless drone of the engines remained.

An icy chill crawled down his spine.

Alex shot to his feet.

"Hello?"

His voice echoed through the cabin.

The sound bounced off the empty seats and faded away.

No answer.

His heart began to race.

"Hello! Is anyone here?"

This time he shouted louder.

Silence answered him.

A dead, suffocating silence.

Alex stepped into the aisle.

Every footstep echoed hollowly against the floor.

He scanned each row as he passed.

Everything was exactly where it should be.

Too exactly.

A blanket lay half-folded on a seat.

A magazine sat open to the middle.

A glass of orange juice rested on a tray table.

Half a sandwich still bore the marks of a bite.

It was as if every passenger had vanished in the middle of an ordinary moment.

No signs of panic.

No screams.

No evidence of an emergency.

Just...

Gone.

Everyone was simply gone.

Alex swallowed hard.

His throat felt dry.

He quickened his pace.

Near the rear of the cabin, a cellphone lay abandoned on a seat.

Its screen was black.

He grabbed it.

Pressed the power button.

Nothing.

He tried another.

Then a third.

None of them worked.

It was as if every device had died at the exact same moment.

A flash of lightning erupted outside the window.

The cabin lit up for an instant.

Alex looked outside.

Massive black storm clouds surrounded the aircraft.

Dense.

Heavy.

Like an endless ocean of darkness.

No moon.

No stars.

No other planes.

Only black skies.

And distant flashes of lightning.

He continued toward the galley.

The kitchen area was completely deserted.

A coffee pot sat on the counter.

Alex touched it.

Ice cold.

As if it had been sitting there for days.

But that was impossible.

He clearly remembered a flight attendant pouring coffee before he fell asleep.

Or did he?

Alex felt his head begin to spin.

He pressed the flight attendant call button.

Ding.

The chime sounded.

He waited.

One second.

Two seconds.

Ten seconds.

No one came.

Sweat formed on his forehead.

"Okay..."

he muttered.

"Okay, stay calm..."

But his heartbeat only grew faster.

He rushed to the lavatories.

The first door swung open.

Empty.

The second.

Empty.

The third.

Still empty.

There was no one on this plane.

At least, no one he could see.

A primal terror tightened around his chest.

Alex turned and ran back toward the passenger cabin.

Now every footstep sounded like someone chasing him.

He kept glancing over his shoulder.

Nothing.

Yet the feeling of being watched grew stronger.

As if hundreds of unseen eyes were staring from the dark corners of the aircraft.

He nearly stumbled back to seat 23A.

The worn leather notebook slipped from his hand.

Thud.

It hit the floor and fell open.

Alex bent down to pick it up.

Then froze.

A loose page rested inside.

Covered in jagged black handwriting.

Not his handwriting.

He knew that immediately.

He had filled nearly every page of this notebook himself.

But this page had never been there before.

Under the dim cabin lights, a single sentence stared back at him:

"They are watching."

The blood in Alex's veins seemed to freeze.

"I didn't write this..."

he whispered.

"I didn't..."

A crackling pop sounded overhead.

The intercom system.

Alex snapped his head upward.

Static hissed through the cabin speakers.

Krrr...

Krrr...

The interference continued for several seconds.

Then stopped.

His heart pounded painfully against his ribs.

The cabin seemed frozen in place.

The air itself felt thick.

Then...

A woman's voice came through the speakers.

Calm.

Gentle.

Terrifyingly clear.

"Alex."

He jumped to his feet.

His eyes swept across the cabin.

No one.

Not a single person.

The voice continued.

"Do not leave your seat."

Alex felt his breath catch in his throat.

"Who are you?"

No answer.

Only the engines.

Then the voice spoke again.

This time almost a whisper.

As if she were standing directly behind him.

"Listen carefully."

A massive bolt of lightning tore across the sky outside.

Blinding white light flooded the cabin.

For a brief instant...

Alex thought he saw figures sitting in every seat.

Silent.

Motionless.

All facing him.

Then darkness returned.

Every seat was empty again.

Alex no longer trusted what he had seen.

The woman's voice spoke one final time.

Colder now.

More urgent.

"Don't look out the window."

The intercom clicked off.

The cabin fell silent once more.

But this time Alex knew one thing for certain.

He was not alone on this flight.

May you like

And whatever was sharing the plane with him...

Was not human.
