HOSPITAL PHOTO OF MITCH McCONNELL RELEASED AS SENATOR REMAINS UNABLE TO RETURN TO CAPITOL HILL
The latest image was deliberately issued by McConnell’s office—not secretly leaked. The Kentucky Republican has left the hospital but remains inside a rehabilitation facility and has not been medically cleared to resume Senate duties.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office has released a new photograph of the Kentucky Republican alongside his wife, Elaine Chao, as concerns continue to grow over his prolonged absence from the Senate.
The photograph was distributed publicly on Monday and was described by McConnell’s office as having been taken the previous day. Contrary to the viral claim that a hospital image “was not supposed to get out,” there is no indication that it was leaked or obtained without authorization. It accompanied an official update intended to reassure the public about the senator’s recovery.
The update nevertheless confirmed an important fact: McConnell has been discharged from hospital care, but he has not returned home or resumed his normal schedule. He remains in an inpatient rehabilitation facility and has not been cleared to leave or return to his Senate office.

Recovery continues after June fall
McConnell, 84, was admitted to a Washington-area hospital on June 14 after falling at his home and briefly losing consciousness.
According to statements released by his office, examinations found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack or stroke. While hospitalized, however, he developed a mild case of pneumonia and was treated with antibiotics before being transferred to rehabilitation.
The congressional Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell is undergoing several physical-therapy sessions each day. The treatment is designed to rebuild his strength and reduce the risk of another fall.
Doctors also said the lasting effects of childhood polio remain a significant factor in his mobility and are complicating the pace of his recovery.

No timetable for his Senate return
McConnell said he continues communicating with his staff and following Senate business from the rehabilitation center. But neither his office nor the congressional physician has provided a firm date for his return to Washington.
His recovery will also prevent him from attending Kentucky’s annual Fancy Farm picnic, a political gathering he has regularly attended for more than four decades.
McConnell said he was disappointed to miss the event but remained focused on completing physical therapy and returning to both Kentucky and the Senate.
The senator is not seeking reelection and plans to retire when his current term concludes in January 2027. He has said he still intends to finish that term rather than resign early.

The photograph does not end the questions
McConnell’s office has now released two photographs of him since the June hospitalization. The first appeared July 12, while the second was released July 27.
The images have challenged false online claims that McConnell had died or entered a vegetative state. But because he has not appeared publicly or delivered a video statement, questions about his ability to resume the full responsibilities of office have continued.
The most accurate account is less sensational than the headline.

A secret hospital image did not escape into the public domain. McConnell’s own staff intentionally released the photograph as part of an official health update.
But the update also delivered sobering news: more than six weeks after his fall, one of the Senate’s longest-serving and most influential Republicans remains medically unable to return to Capitol Hill—and no one has yet said when that may change.
